That looks like just what I need to get my car moving again. I have 14 days to determine if I have a seized bearing on my car, and try to determine how much work it will be to fix or replace. If shipping is going to be $ 1500 I have my doubts as to whether it will be any cheaper than pulling mine out and figuring out how to fix it.

Someone who knows, tell me this: assuming a bad bearing, I pull the engine, get the oil pan out o' the way, loosen stuff so I can turn it, line up timing, take off the flywheel and crank, grind crank, and reinstall with new bearings?
is that all there is to it? ha ha. just want to make sure I am not missing something really major. While I was in there I guess I would put in a new chain and rails, and seals in the IP.
I have pulled a 617 engine and years ago rebuilt a couple of bug engines. they ran when I got done.
thanks for all the help, andy

considering the fact that the bottom ends on mb engines are usually the last thing to wear out i would be concerned about other things. in other words what about the bores, pistons and upper end, not to mention oil pump etc etc, etc.

just doing bearings and not thinking of anything else seems dangerous.

Sorry...you cannot regrind that crank...it's induction hardened as are rod crank ends....Mercedes insists you replace the crank as a ground crank will have a very short life. If the rod bearing spun or the rod blued...it's scrap.

You best search for a running motor.

Hey guru, I've got an SDL with an almost-shot tranny but running engine. Want to play "lets-make-a-deal"?

Just what you noticed in the pictures. It would be to nice to have an up close and personal inspection.

If these engines were close enough to be bought in person, and for a reasonable amount. They probably have a bunch of decent parts on them, no way of knowing how much time they have though.

Could be 1 hour or 10,000 hours.

I can see it has the old type vacuum pump. It is also likely to have the #14 head. Other parts could be useful. but the shipping cost is going to negate any deal. Any forum member lives in Alaska?
Often the US Government classified parts/equipment/materials as surplus. It can be junk, used or even brand new. It is often not worthwhile to bid sight unseen - pictures don't tell everything!

If it from the govt, then I would not trust them at all.

I believe that one is a #15 and the rest are #17s. Don't know which one is the #15. If you call them up they can give you more information.

Yeah but the engines look pretty fresh. IP lines, valve cover ect. If I could get one to my door for $500 I'd buy it.
