190 stuff

Replace the ignition cylender ASAP!!!!

The 190's dashboard is quite small and is probably the most difficult car to have to cut out a bad ignition cylender. I know someone who paid upwards of $800 to have his ignition cylender replaced when it failed. You can get a VIN coded cylender and replace it yourself with a paperclip from a parts provider for about $75. If you don't mind two keys you can do it cheaper.

The other thing you should also consider looking into the heater core. I have read about 190's dumping hot coolant onto drivers feet due to plastic parts that have failed in the heater core or related plumbing. Other than the obvious burning sensation while driving it can cause an accident in the event someone is surprised with a large amount of boiling coolant dropping onto their feet.

Not sure how to help you with the jackpoint questions. Perhaps somene in the rustbelt might have some suggestions. Here in Atlanta we have more problem stripping our teutonic machines of 20 inch chrome spinners rather than rust.

I know you didn't ask about the rust spots around the jacking points but I'm going to tackle the same problem soon on my donor body and here's a thread I found about repairing it, just in case.

You'll need to check the timing chain. Take a peek here: M119 E420 timing chain/ rails replace?

The chain on my 86 snapped at 102K miles - $2200 to repair.

thanks for the rust repair diy. i plan to weld some new sheet metal and supports on it. i used por15 years ago on my 1st 300sd and i loved the stuff.
the ignition cyliner feels fine, doesnt bind or anything, i may graphite it just to keep it working like new.

Rick Miley: thanks for the info on the timing chain. i just looked it all up and im gonna do the chain, all the guides and possibly the tensioner if it looks bad. how much harder is it to do than on a om617?

thanks for all the help

My friend's failed with no advanced notice. If your willing to take the gamble I hope you have good luck. The Cylender on my 300SD failed without notice as well when I had a key made. As luck would have it a locksmith was there at the time that my ignition failed and he was able to remove the cylender with the key and vicegrips.

Im even considering replacing the cylender on my 1999 S320 just as a precaution.

well the owner before me was the second owner of the car and all he had on the ring was a plastic key chain. so that takes some stress off the cylinder. it appears to have an electric fan clutch, could that be the reason the fan will free wheel when off? the sunroof on that thing is neat, not only does it open but it also pops up. we got the title all transfered into our name so all it needs is to be emissions tested and then its all done. it really is a nice car.
