My 300SD wont go into reverse

The reverse gear seems to have gone out in my 300sd, its not like it just went out all of a sudden, it just started to not want to reverse unless i pressed the pedel down further and further. Over about a 2-3 week period it went out. Any Ideas?

C32AMG 04-28-2006 07:33 PM

What year is your 300SD?

Hatterasguy 04-28-2006 07:34 PM

Sounds like trans rebuild time, how many miles?

pmally 04-28-2006 07:45 PM

its a 1980 300SD i dont know how many miles exactly but im thinking around 200k i was also told that it might be the "bands" that need to be tightened but i have no idea where thoes are located and how to adjust them

after getting in an accident with my car, the last thing i want to have to do is rebuild the transmission ( i ran into another car dammaging my radiator and front bumper)

The B3 reverse band adjustment bolt can be one of two styles, a sheer-off style or one that needs no modification, just turn the bolt with 10mm socket With no reverse that bad can be toasted, it’s worth a try.

The adjustment is on the passenger side front of the Transmissionhttp://www.mastertechtrans.com/post/B1.jpg

You can’t work on transmissions unless you get drenched with oil, that’s part of the initiation of the transmissions rebuilder association.:D

DON'T ask me what an mkp is.
RayM.- I would be very reluctant to remove the adjustment screw. There appears to be a separate pin that rides between it and the band that could very well slip off and end up in the case. Tread lightly here.

I had no choice but to remove it slowly. Even after removed I couldn't adjust the nut on the bolt.
I found this:http://www.peachparts.com/shopforu...t=REVERSE+BAND
message 6 gives a great direction. I tried it but no luck. I could not get the nut off of the bolt or budge from its position on the bolt. I removed it all together and replaced it with another from one of my parts cars. I tightened it all the way the tried it at every 1/2 turn up to 4 full turns. ( raise car ,turn ,lower and start) No luck. I'm beginning to believe i need to remove it again and file a 1/16 to 1/8th off the end so that when I replace it ,it will tighten in farther.I'll put a pic on the post to show what i mean. In side the inner cylinder it is about 1/2 deep. at the base it looks like a pin has worn down a 1/8 inch depth indention. I'm thinking that if i shave off 1/8 inch off the length of the bolt It would tighten down to the correct position to back out and achieve reverse. I don't know. Does anyone know any better to guide me. The frustration level is mounting. Thank goodness it goes forward, even if it goes forward now in Park & Neutral. Seems to be no 1st.gear. It feels like it starts in 2nd. And L is like park. Darn But it still goes FORWARD and has for 3 weeks now. I'm tempted to leave well enough alone until I get better direction. RAY M. See pic's mentioned in thread ( 722.120 Trans Losing Reverse ) about post 21 i think.

Hello fine people,

I must admit if it was not for this thread I would have ended up with a 2nd hand tranny and around $800.

Thanks you very very much.

Keep up the good spirit. :)

Best regards,

Fitian

My the reverse on my car stopped working about 6 months ago. I'm attempting to screw in the adjustment screw on my 79 300d as shown in the post above. It seems really tight(in both directions though), and I can't turn it with the notch I cut. Does this mean that the adjustment is not loose and something else is broken or the adjustment bolt is just seized. Any advice would be appreciated - hope I don't need a new transmission.

You must loosen the lock nut first, and then hold it the wrench, turning the adjustment bolt may turn the lock nut, thus preventing turning the adjustment bolt. Some bolts have sealant on the threads, if it will not turn, carefully heat the bolt
