190 2.5 TD trasmission problem

Hello, I am new here but have not found any threads on this.
My father owns a 1990 Mercedes 190 2.5 Turbo Diesel. Bought it used, and it ran great. As of late, the reverse does not work. Sometimes when he revs it up, it suddlenly engages. Or it goes really slow. Forward gears work fine. This after a very recent transmission oil change.
He lives in Portugal, and the mechanics tell him he needs something that has valves in it. Others tell him to get rid of the auto tranny and got a manual transmission installed, but that is a significant cost increase.
Any help on what to look for, any related threads, or where and which pieces to purchase would be greatly appreciated. I am a little weary of just taking the local shop's word.
