Buffer screw. What? Where?

I did a search on here for info on this and I couldn't find anything so maybe I don't have the right term. I know it smoothes out a rough idle. Is it the same as the idle governor adjustment pin or is it something else? When mine was replaced in '02 the shop listed it as adjustment bolt and charged me $28. The adjustmetn pin I saw online was over $100 so I'm thinking it's not the same (or the online shop is way overpriced). Any and all info would be great, I'm looking to smooth out the idfe on my 1980 300SD as well as a friends '82 300D turbo.

Thanks,
John

You might not need a new one. Take out the old one and have a look at it; if it seems fine (it should have a springy tip) it probably just needs adjustment. When I adjusted mine I was amazed at the difference.

It's located on the IP on the side facing the oil filter housing. A very easy thing to do.
