keys and locks
I have an 81 240d recently purchased. The keys that came with the car open the doos and unlock the ignition but do not unlock the trunk if the doors are locked.
Is there another key ie a valet key that i dont have? if i go to the dealer 120 miles one way will they have the ability to make me what I need? thank in advance jjm |

Does your key work in the glove box? If not, it is probably a valet key. The dealer can order a VIN cut key, but they cannot make one on the spot. So I don't think it's worth a 120 mile drive. Mercedes corporate does require proof of ownership of the car to order a key. So you might try calling the dealership and asking if they will accept a fax of your driver's license and registration.

Yes, the dealer should be able to order you keys for your car. I ordered three for my 420 back when I purchased it around Feb, just brought the title, registration, etc with to prove I owned it.
Since distance is an issue for you, I'd call them first. You will need to provide the VIN number.

Are you sure it doesn't work in the trunk? Mine requires a strange combination of pushing the lock in and turning the key at the same time. I hardly ever use the key in the trunk, but when I do it always takes several tries to get it unlocked. You may want to fiddle with it a little before you order new keys.

Yes, that trunk lock has confounded more than its share of new MB owners. Turn the key CCW, then push the button in while holding the key in the CCW position. If the key won't turn, then you have another problem.
But ordering a new key is not likely to help. Unless locks have been changed, one key should fit everything. And if the trunk lock was changed, a new key from the dealer won't fit it either. |

Mine does this 2
if i lock the car, the trunk will lock and i cannot open it, however i can "DOUBLE" lock it, which means when i unlock the car, if i double lock it, the trunk will still be locked i just lock the car, never do i lock the trunk seperate, b/c locking it by the door handle locks the doors, trunk, and fuel tank

Madsen,
I ordered a key from the dealer for my '80 300SD by using the serial number. The new key wouldn't lock or unlock anything. When I complained about it not working they told me the locks must have changed. NO refund of my $30. So they took my key and had another one made from it for another $30 ,of course. But this one worked in all the locks. So U might be better off having a copy made from a key that works. But if your key goes into the trunk lock but won't open it the lock cylinder has probably been changed and getting another key from the serial number won't work. The cut of the keys is the same. The valet key is supposed to be thicker so it won't slide into the glove box or trunk lock. The valet key is supposed to only work in the doors and the key switch. P E H |
