diesel interchange

Hi I have a 84 300sd. The engine is destoyed due to lack of oil. I can obtain a 1982 300dt. I know all the Id numbers on the engine are the same except for the last one of which is 617.952 on the dt and 617951 is the sd. Can I put the dt engine in the sd. What are the differences.

The 82 dt engine will have the rear suspension oil pump on the head. Someone else will have to speak up if you can somehow disable the pump. Some of the vacuum fittings on the throttle linkage may be different but you can switch that over from the '84. Pull the engine and trans as one unit. It WILL save you alot of hassle.

I think you're reading that as "TD" instead of "DT", the difference being the "TD" is the wagon that has the self-leveling suspension in the back as opposed to the "DT", which is a diesel sedan with a turbo. The propper designation for the latter is actually just "D" but some ppl prefer "DT". I asked this question earlier and it was sugested to me that the only problem might be the engine mount arms but they can be switched out with no problem. If you're going to be swapping trannies, however, the SD has an electronic speedo sender and the D a mechanical. Other than that, if you can swap the tailhousings on the trannies, I think they're the same too.
