190d - 4 mini k&n filters on intake runners--or keep stock air box?
I had an idea where I would put on 4 of the smaller k&n air filters directly on the intake runners.
I was curious if this would be of any benefit to performance? I know it probably sounds crazy but I am just not in love with the airbox at all. I also know this would be sucking in hot engine air too...which leave me curious if I was to make my own intake box. My car isn't a turbo so gains on the intake side wouldn't be that dramatic if at all. But I was just curious if i'm the only person ever to think of this... Thanks, -Mike |

What are you going to do with the valve cover vent hose?

Spend the money elsewhere or send it to me to spend.

k & n filter
Mike, I have the rectangular K & N filter that fits in the factory air filter housing. Many years ago, I did time trials and autocrossed my euro 190D, so I explored every possible mod to improve performance. I timed acceleration runs at Summit Point track comparing the fresh K & N, a new MB air filter, no filter at all with the housing in place, and no filter at all with the housing completely removed. There was no significant difference, just more noise. I did laps comparing K & N, new MB filter, and no filter all with the filter housing in place and again, very little difference. You might try replacing the plastic hose between the scoop and the housing with a constant sized diameter hose to make you feel better about unimpeded airflow, but with only 76 horsepower or so, little changes really don't make any difference.
Andmoon, the vent hose from the valve cover does not go into the air filter housing, but connects to hoses that go directly into the intake manifold. |

I think that would look cool, it would certainly be unique. But sucking in hot air is not so good, I'm not too familiar w/ the 190 engine bay, but could you leave part of the air box ducting in place to direct some cool air flow @ the filters?

MB designs the air intakes with enough flow stock. You will gain nothing.
Unless you are doing some other pretty large mods, like a Holset turbo, spend your money on other things.

Thanks for all the comments guys.
I'm going to keep her stock. However, it seems that i'm missing one of the clips...guess i'll have to figure out a way to clamp that side shut. Maybe I can scavange one of similar design from another car. I've read you might have to buy the whole air box since clips are not sold separately. Thanks again, oh and by the way I bought 2 factory air filters so it looks like i'll be using the stock air box for sure -Mike |

Cummins wont void your warranty for K&N, It is like any aftermarket product they have to prove it caused the damage. I hate K&N though, they are bad in my opinion. On most of our trucks on the TDR we have replaced the filter box with something we call BHAF, Big Honkin Air Filter. It is a paper element filter that is about 16" long and about 10" Diameter, they are used in semis, and then we run a water proof pre filter over that from outerwares. It replaces are air box. That actually works really well, it has the same filtering quality as the factory filter, but it is designed for ALOT more volume of air.
