old style ip vacuum gasket

my 76 240d manual smokes a good amount. when i bought it the owner said it was a gasket on the injection pump that was bad. i looked the car over and there is a vacume line running from the ip to the intake manifold. i see a place where the gasket should be towards the end of the ip. i have no idea what i will see when i take it apart. if this gasket is bad can it cause it to smoke or is the seller lying?
the car runs pretty darn good besides this.

Are you talking about smoke coming from oil leaking on the engine?

Or are you talking tailpipe?

I wonder if the PO was referring to the pneumatic diaphragm, not a gasket?

its coming from the tailpipe. the guy says the diapram somthing or another on the ip is bad. thus making it smoke.

A 76 has the old style IP with pneumatic governor, not like the later models. He is talking about the diaphragm for the pneumatic governor. I have heard that this is not too difficult, but you might need to find someone who is familiar with the old style pumps.
