Some 95 300D question's

Ok, here it goes...this car has been in my family since it had 7 miles on it. My father put 109,000 miles on it. All the service has been done (amsoil used at all oil change's)..fuel lines replaced at 90k and the evap core redone about 19k ago. Here are some of my questions.

1. when shuting car off the car shakes (not a smooth shut off) is it normal?
2. the car shifts hard when acceling hard (more than a normal hard upshift) that is comparied to a gas car.
3. it seems like when it is cold even after the glow plug light has gone off the car will start rough and even die out if you don't let it warm up a looong time.
4 I live in cleveland ohio....what weight oil should I use....in a syn

Thank's in advance for all your help....I hope that none of these questions are to stupid...I will post pics of car later....I am in love with the gas mileage....Oh and i love the heated seat's with lumbar.....

As Brian said, you should probably research it a bit on the board. But I'll give you a couple suggestions anyway. Shaking when turning off - it's time for motor mounts. Hard shifting is generally a vacuum leak situation.

Can't help with the slow warmup situation other than to suggest glow plugs. My '95 fires up immediately down to temps in the teens and settles to a smooth idle right away.

This is a guess because I am not familer with how the engine is mounted on that car. I suspect liquid filled motor mounts.

But on the W126's the shake at shut down is caused by failed engine shocks, or collapsed motor mounts. Or a combo of both. If they are original after 11 years may not be a bad idea to change.

Congrats on the new car, one of my favorite E class diesels!

Don't listen to the guys above.
The car is ready to die a slow and expensive death.
Give me a call and I'll take it off your hands.

Can a small vac leak cause rough shutdown?

Yeah, check the motor mounts. Mine did the same thing on shut down before replacing. Actually I was getting vibration in neutral that would go away when in gear. New motor mounts and life was much better. I've never checked my transmission mounts, do those go bad?

I can't say that my car upshifts hard. Could be a vacuum problem as others mentioned.

Check your fuel lines for air bubbles. Mine had that problem...and got worse over time. Car was not happy when started cold but would get better once warmed up. My guess is that the o-rings expanded just enough from the heat to stop the air leaks. But as the o-rings/fuel lines got worse so did the problem. Replaced those parts (common on these cars) and life was much better, again.

I've never been to Cleveland, so I can't tell advise you on the weight motor oil you should use. In Maryland in run regular oil (gasp!) from Jiffy Lube (gasp!).

Chuck
