224 will probably need a rebuild. Either way who knows if the odo's are correct? My 300d has a stock one it, well worth the $$$ I would think either way.

Anything north of $300 is getting real pricey for a 20-YO tranny IMO.

I bought a broken 240D a couple of weeks ago and there was a reciept in the glove box for a new 4 spd tranny @$750.00 but that was in 02 dollars. A low mileage tranny would be worth a few extra bucks.

of course givent the choice i would pick the 124 k tranny, but i wouldnt be afraid of one with 224k either.

i have had a lot with 250k plus and no problems. i did replace one with less than that but in retrospect i believe it was a shifter problem not tranny.

Tom

The 5 spd in my "79" has 250K plus miles on it and I can really feel the differance when I drive the 240 with the new tranny. The 5 spd doesnt grind when shifted fast at higher RPMs (merging ) it just is alot looser... just about how most of these manual trannys feel after 250K Not sure I'm up to getting inside one of those critters yet but I may think rebuild someday.

Avoid any junkyard that does not have a price list available to you BEFORE you show up at the counter with your just picked parts. I actually threw a Subaru passenger side rear view mirror at a fat greasy owner of just such a junkyard when he tried to charge me $50 for it. (yes, in case you are wondering, I DID run away immediately afterwards)

these guys are crooks, but I print out their price list and take it with me when I visit their establishment(s)
