W124 trunk mechanism (not lock related)

I noticed the past weeks that the trunk (closed) was more and more out of alignment, now I can almost stick a finger in it above the rear lights!
well, it appears that the driver side elbow tube that links the trunk to the hinges, is slowly ripping apart, the spring is tearing it. Must be an uncommon failure, any way, how do you unfasten the hinges from the car? From within the trunk the elbow thingy is in the way, do I have to remove the back window to get to it from the top?

Don't have direct experience with the issue. But, you may be able to get access by removing the rear seat back or rear deck...
