Most thieves are dumbasses. They see "diesels are hot" in the news and hear Bush {who they MAY recognize} say bio diesel is the wave of the future, and automatically assume in their drunken stupor that ANY diesel (and especially with MB badges) on the trunk, that this set of wheels is cool or at least worth a couple of hits of some drugs purchases.
