Cool 1980 300sd grinding sound (Fan clutch?)

Hi -
car mileage 450K (1980 300sd w116)

motor replaced 120K ago. I have all service records on this car as it has been in the family ever since German delivery in 1980. Over past 4 months, had on jack stands doing front end rebuild and finally got it back on the highway. It has developed a howling sound and random 'loud' clicking sound in front of engine (while in Park not moving). This in my opinion eliminates any drive train problem. prior to it being an idle problem, I was having a squeel at higher RPM's. Now this idle noise which goes away as soon as I rev it gently (probably still below 1500 rpm's). smooths right out... Had a major e-service less than 10K miles ago.

Took off hose from turbo to air cleaner and she looks fine.. spins freely although when off and idling initially was still.. when I rev'd up, it spun up and never stopped after that.. nor did I get any direct noise when it start spinning.. again.. I don't think it's the turbo.

Could this be the fan clutch? As I mentioned, none of my service records over the life of the car show it having one replaced..

Any ideas?

Thanks!

getting closer....

removed fan clutch last night.. started her up.. noise gone.
will report final on this once I put the new one on w/ new belts... still narrow possibility that the alternator bearings are making the noise, but unlikely.

no special tools. 10mm wrench to remove fan assembly (includes fan clutch). Larger size to remove and replace fan clutch to fan blade assembly (haven't done that yet).

All done!

Well, after a few weeks (elapsed) down time, 300sd back online w/ new fan clutch, new belts (x3), new A/T cooling lines (x2), new engine shocks (x2), and steering coupler.

All in all, the steering coupler was contributing to my sloppy steering (prior front end rebuild project), and fan clutch was the howling noise w/ squeel..

running like a newbie now.. and wow.. what a ride..

Very nice. I love the look of those W116 SD's, especially one with mileage that high.
