vwnate1,

Because it's a sub-woofer. It's a very low frequency speaker that basically supplies a very low "thump, thump" bass effect. It doesn't matter where it gets placed since that low frequency is not directional and will transfer through most any material and space. Home theater sound systems use sub-woofers and they are typically placed in the corner of a room, sometimes behind a chair or something. These home units are often 12" x 12" boxes (or more) with the speaker on the bottom, pointing at the floor. Make sense now? Less critical of others now?

Also great for making the quarter panels rattle if played loud enough.

No I'm not less critical of others who do things specifically to bother others, not increase their own enjoyment .

Makes the quarter panels of all the neighboring cars quiver a bit too some times.

Looks like a wonderful parts car. The Euro features should live on - https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/mld/cto/d/mercedes-benz-300d-w123/6626034685.html

For $900 there are a lot of good parts there if you have the time and storage room. i have neither.

? Its a sub. That's the perfect place for it. The lows travel through with no issues. Very clean install actually. I've been toying with the idea of repurposing the spare tire well as a sub for my wagon, completely hiding the speaker from outside eyes.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt .

well, for some maybe but not for me,
I'd rather have a hardtop! problem here is the Calif Smog Police make it hard to get a DMV reg with a gas to diesel conversion, but if I were to go through all the meetings with the DMV referees trying to meet their strict guidelines I would choose this one and stick my OM603 in it:

This car has been Mercedes Dealer Serviced most of its life and has a very extensive Car Fax service history all done by Mercedes Dealership Service Departments. There are close to 60 Car Fax Service records for this car, there would be more, but the Car Fax Tracking started only in 2003! One of the major recent services that probably cost over $10K was a Head Gasket replacement and major AC service done by Mercedes! Everything on this car looks like it is a couple of years old. Inside and out. This one looks and drives like it! The AC blows COLD! All of the power windows and door locks are working.

Oh wow when did Mercedes develop a D Class?
or maybe that D stands for Dealer?
awfully Pricey for an old diesel, a non turbo at that!
they say the AC works? I wonder if it was converted to 134a?
for $8000 one can find a late model whatever, even a diesel if you want...
speaking of Dealers, I checked Yelp for the link on that CL ad, sheesh they seem to have a LOT of 1 star ratings and a lot of 5 star ratings and nothing in between. I certainly wouldn't purchase a car from them after reading the 1 ratings.
