So true. In 2003 I gave a young nephew my '93 300E. He's a really good kid but needed a car and, being free wheeling and maybe a bit idealistic, never worked just for money.'


Problem was I am in NJ and he lived in SF. I would have helped him drive the car cross country, but he was able to shell out the money to have it shipped, although I don't know the details about how it was done.


Through him, I learned that MB's are well loved out there. He had a mechanic who worked on a lot of MB's and who, according to my nephew, was always fair about what needed to be fixed and pricing.


Sadly, a few years later the car was totalled by a hit and run driver while parked on a public street. By coincidence, when my daughter lived in SF a couple of years ago, the same happened to her '10 Corolla; totalled by a hit and run driver while parked on a public street.

Here's an 80 that needs an engine. He says the trans was changed and AC worked. Seems like a good starting point if he gets the price reasonable.

Would the stock engine be a 617?

Yeah, stock engine is an OM617. "AC was working on it..." --probably 30 years ago. Seriously, these cars never have properly functioning climate control, and it's SO difficult to fix them. That's why I'm converting mine to manual climate control. Nice looking car, though.

I dont know why u guys are so skeptical when it comes to these cars and dealerships...

No dealership is gonna accept a 40 year old trade in unless it's a one owner great looking great driving car, they aren't stupid.


With that said, I know the price is nearly never right with a dealership...
