I've said this before, and I'll say it again- I am amazed at all the Mercedes-Benz Diesel vehicles for sale in your area. You probably have more posts in this thread than all the other threads combined!

I'm not surprised ~ most w123 Coupes here in So. Cal. are battered, if this one is as good as it looked it's worthwhile to purchase and rebuild or swap running gear from a wreck into....

Nate: I have a white '82 coupe for sale. It is the "Pick-A-Part" save in a thread here. It has no fourth gear, so I have a complete 4 spd kit to put in it. I just need time to do it........Rich

I suggest you buy this thing for parts. The door handles alone go for $100 bucks and that is without re-keying.

Wagon runs great, paint has few chips, some rust on middle floor board.

Only 2 owners, only one mechanic. Have all maintenance records.

Ok, that was the post from the ppl I bought this thing from. It did run properly and the tachometer actually worked while I was test driving it, the tach died on the way home.
"paint has few chips, some rust on middle floor board" well that's laughable, there is a 3 x 5 inch hole in the rear passenger foot well and one of the rear drivers seat mounts is gone, I have a block of wood under there. Not only does this thing leak like a sieve they apparently left the sunroof ajar for years (notice the sunroof pic above, it's from their post). After I bought it, I reached up and turned the handle and it closed. >.> durrr It rained rust flakes down on me for two months. This thing is a rust bucket. If you want it for any body panels you should know they are most likely to be nothing but rust inside. The mechanic was no body man, he couldn't even sell them a tube of touch up paint.

And now for the bad stuff:
Because of the Design Flaw where they put easily cloggable, constantly filled with wet debris pockets beside the hood hinges, the balance springs fell off and one of their hinges completely rusted out.
There was apparently pretty bad damage to the drivers side front all the way back to the passenger door where the horrible bubbling paint job is. I assume they replaced the fender and drivers door with ones that were already silver.
The heater/defog motor went out and occasionally comes back on when you hit a big bump and the thing is warm and dry, probably the relays or whatever get soaked when it rains. I was using a windshield wiper blade to wipe off all the water on the inside while driving down the road the winter, what fun. >.< I never tried to turn on the air conditioner.
The starter motor went out, at least I'm pretty sure it did. It started normally one morning and I went to the store then when I came out it just barely cranked over but started and I went to another store, when I came out it went wunk wunk wunk and that was it. Well there was a parts store nearby so bought a new battery and that did nothing. I called AAA and they tested the battery, said it was ok , and put their little jumper on it and got a weak click from the solenoid. So I crawled under the thing and the voltage across the solenoid was the same as the battery. I then jumped across the solenoid and got nothing from the motor and when I jumped to the the solenoid the same anemic click was produced. That seems to rule out wet relays under the dash but these things are weird, who knows.
The front passenger door got rubbed hard by one of those damnable orange parking lot dumpster protecting poles then later on some kid thew a 20 lb chunk of concrete at me though that window so that door is shot. Then I rubbed hard against a stump of a tree limb above the fuel filler door trying to get out of a tight parking spot. So that panel is toast too. It also has rust holes along the top. All post picture above.
The drivers window was stuck down when I bought it. I removed the door panel and jumped it up, so the motor works. I don't remember if I hooked it back up but it didn't matter, the previous owners pushed on the button so hard trying to get it up they pushed it right through the center console.
As for the rest of it, it is the result of your typical 1970's and 80's lackadaisical design and execution.

Now the good stuff:
It did start and run fine until the starter thing, I suppose you could use it as a beater like I did, it's just that I don't want to spend the money for somebody to fix it. I could do it but I don't want to crawl under that man crusher with just a couple of jack-stands and on top of that it looks like you have to remove the exhaust system including the turbo just to get at the top bolt which I can't see from the top. According to the mercedes source guy you need a special 1/2 in toggle extension to go along with all the 1/2 in extensions you have to get at it. The half in is because the bolts are probably stuck and you need the strength and extra leverage to get them out. Again, I don't want to be yanking on big wrenches under that thing.
Besides a new battery, I got a rebuilt alternator from Alternators Unlimited a year or so ago and it worked great And 2 good used tires a couple of months ago, one for the left rear that had a slow leak that eventually turned into a flat and one for the spare. Incidentally I had to use a five foot break-over bar to remove those stupid lug bolts, at least with lug nuts you can spray on some WD-40.

I will not respond to any inquires if you obviously haven't read the full post.

That's actually a bargain, considering the wagon specific items (SLS system parts, tail lights, SLS head). A decent running OM617 and trans is at least worth the $500 asking price.
