Raffer, my opinion is: RUN AWAY!!!

from the ad:
"Car does have rust.
Floor pans are hanging down."

If you want the car just for parts or you own a body shop experienced in rust repair, go for it.

Would you say it would be worth it to use as a beater for a little while until it dies and then salvage it for parts for my other TD? And then just scrap the rusted body afterwards?

So I'm currently thinking about picking this up. Its located in New England.

"3 owner car originally from California. 264k miles. It has been stored in a parking garage in New York the past 4 years and has been a weekend driver. He says the AC needs a recharge since its not blowing cold air. Back wiper needs a motor. All gauges including the clock on the dash are all working. New carpet installed in the rear wagon section. manual sunroof, power lock and windows all working, new battery and 2 sets of keys. Body and frame on this car are rust free and the paint is in exceptional condition for its age. car has been maintained by the Mercedes Benz dealer and all the service records and receipts have been recorded in the manual."

Seller is asking $5500 obo

This would be my first Mercedes as well as my first diesel car. I've heard these make great daily drivers especially in Connecticut. I know how to wrench and I've done a bit of research on 300td's as I almost purchased one last year, but as a 25 year old with little to no knowledge on these cars should I pull the trigger and how much should I offer him?

The white wagon is a deal if there is no rust and runs fine, and all other than the AC is working properly. You won't go wrong at the asking price, but offer $5k and see if the seller takes it.

The car was actually priced at $6k and he knocked it down to $5500 this week. I was thinking about maybe offering $4700 and seeing how that goes. You don't think that's a slap in the face right?

Justinian- Be ready to pay the asking price, but do try to get it for less. Nice examples like this are getting more rare each day. Just a few years ago that car would have had a line of people waiting for a chance to buy it at $5,500. I suggest you do what it takes to not let it get away. You may not get another chance.......Rich

I love it "all run but have not been started in years".

That means that they USED to run - perhaps, at one time long ago in a far away place.

My first wife drove a 64 spitfire as her 1st car. Her brother sold it because he didn't wrench and shocks (they had a strange set up but I forget) were expensive.

I have a 75 MGB that I bought new and should have been a barn find. Instead, I needed space and let it rust away when they were everywhere. I'm sad. It was fun to drive.

Euphemisms to watch for:

- A/C system needs a simple recharge (expect $2000 in a/c repairs)
- Just a bit of surface rust around the jack points (needs sills and floorpan)
- The odometer stopped working just last week (the odometer hasn't worked in 20 years)
- The transmission may need a simple vacuum adjustment (the transmission is fersheetzen, it will cost $3000 to repair)
- Has 650K miles, but these cars go a million. (please!)
- Ran perfectly when parked (but how does it run now).
- Has a small oil leak (it a gusher)
- Should probably have a valve adjustment to run perfect (why doesn't it get one)

Here's the story: if the owner says anything like "all it needs is," then "let him do it" and pay a little more.

LOL "ODOMETER stopped working last week." Yeah. It hasn't worked since the 80's lol.

Anytime you see mileage on these cars, double it and add 20-50k.

1987 Mercedes 300TD wagon.
VIN# WDBEB93D7HF045186

VEHICLE IS NOT DRIVABLE

Engine cranks, but will not start. Vehicle was previously run off of vegetable fuel. Converted back to diesel. Suspected congestion for diesel lines, fuel tank, or diesel injection pump is preventing engine from starting.

Car is in rough shape.
Rear windshield glass is missing.
Needs a new front windshield.
Right rear tire leaking
NO KEY FOR IGNITION
+ more problems
Might make a good parts car for the diesel Mercedes enthusiast.

Pink slip in hand.
