Non-MB diesel-Datsun/Nissan LD 28

Hello folks, anybody have experience with this engine? I’ve recently looked at and driven an 82 Nissan Maxima with a 6 cylinder NA diesel engine. This car had a 5 speed manual transmission and 105K on the odometer. The engine started right up and ran quite smoothly, it didn’t smoke very much other than a moderate black puff when shifting while driving. I’d be interested in hearing from present or past owners about their experiences and impressions, particularly any issues with this engine and its drive train. Also if there is any opinion as to it’s suitability to burn or not to burn VO. If anyone knows of an online discussion or forum that understands these engines I’d be happy to learn of it.

That all being asked, I was pretty impressed with this particular car. I’m always o the lookout for oil burners and I thought I might pick this one up to drive while I engage in at transplant of a good MB engine/drive train into a rust free chassis project I’ve been gearing up for. It seemed to accelerate better than the Benz manual tranny diesel cars I’ve had the opportunity to drive in the past. On the highway it accelerated up to 85 fairly quickly and driving around in town traffic it was no problem at all. I didn’t beat on it but drove it “assertively”. I haven’t had the opportunity to do a technical inspection but a cursory look makes me think that this engine would be a suitable candidate for a transplant into more conventional chassis’s as it doesn’t appear to have a large forward positioned oil sump like the MB oil burners. So when my project is completed I could resell it for something like that. Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks!

Excellent long lasting engine, strong transmission. The trucks and cars they were in rusted out so bad though. The interiors weren't built to last either. The few that survive outside of the rust belt should be good drivers. Expect worn interiors, worn electrical systems and the other issues you would expect from a car 20+ years old. The engines though were solid.

I concur. I believe it also has an inline IP so should be fine on WVO. I think they are quite economical. Nice find.

The biggest problem with that car will be the driveshaft. When it goes bad, parts are NLA and a custom driveshaft is expensive. Also, expect electrical gremlins if there is any rust whatsoever. Been there.

This forum isn't geared toward the LD-28, but the SD-33. Still I think that if you have engine specific questions, there is likely someone over there with the knowhow.

I've owned 2 maxi wagons. an 82 and an 83 diesel. that LD28 engine is solid. rare to find a 5 speed, most were autos...same design as the 280-ZX. you can even bolt on a ZX turbo to it but will have to up the fuel delivery a bit. but has been done before.

The LD28 runs fine on veggie. Smooth engine and decent power.

Most of the LD28 engines have been stripped for the crankshaft. ZX racers low this crank for building monster ZX motors.

there is a decent forum for them http://nissandiesel.dyndns.org

i'm a member but no longer have my maxis so i no longer participate
