i know that some roads are slanted to some small degree. but my car has lots of free play that has nothing to do with the road i travel on. i am not claiming to be an expert, otherwise i would not be asking questions.

if i want to take the rear windshield out, do i first remove the chrome and then have to cut the rubber?

also the driver side door lock wont turn with the key. i have to unlock the passenger door first and then reach through to open the driver door. is there a cheap way to fix these locks? i want to avoid having to rekey the whole car.

The glass comes out simultaneously with the rubber and trim. To install, the rubber is installed on the glass, the trim installed into the rubber and then the assembly installed in the window opening.

Doing this any other way may result in seriously damaging the trim.

Your steering wheel needs to be centered by a good alignment shop. Normally they center the wheel in the car AND then do the alignment.

"the trans cant be shifted from 1st to 2nd too fast or it grinds. i read that some people put heavy motor oil in the trans instead of trans fluid. i am ready to do that, but want to know what exactly people used. 15w 40 synthetic?, rotella dino.."

The syncros are worn and heavy oil wont make the problem go away. I would try using Red Line MTL.

"wheel is turned to about 1.5 o'clock (if it were a watch) if i want to drive straight. the steering is really loose, "

Some times when the steering wheel is not lined up its an indicator that an alignment was done by a shop that did'nt have the proper tools and knowledge for working on a Mercedes.
just to clarify...The allen adjustment is turned CCW to tighten the steering, but go easy.

Congrats on your "new" 240D... and I thought mine had a lot of miles on the odometer! Here's the link to the oil dipstick seal, hopefully that takes care of your oil leak.

http://catalog.eautopartscatalog.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=1ST0O7BRE1T00OF9GT&year=1982&make=MB&model=240-D-002&category=All&part=Oil+Dipstick+Seal

Redline MTL is great stuff but can be hard to find; I had to order mine from eBay. Mobil 1 gear oil, which I use in my differential, is probably almost as good.

Here's an idea for your door lock problem... try swapping the driver and passenger outside door handles. They are interchangeable. The inside handles can also be swapped front to back. I did this a few months ago when my door panels were taken apart for repainting, just to squeeze a little more life out of the existing handles instead of getting new ones. Typical frugal Yankee...

710k!!!!! Is the drivetrain original? Suppose there's no way you could know for sure. That's insane!

well i took the lock appart and just cleaned it up. it works great now, and that makes it alot nicer.

thanks for the link to the dip stick seal. i will order that.

the previous owner filled out the high mileage award, and mercedes sent him the 250k, 500k, 750k and the 1million k award. but there was a small problem, the box and certificate stated 1million kilometers, but the hood award is actually the 1 million MILE award. it is nice to have that, but i want the 1 mil k award on the grill first.

the air filter has lots of oil in it. the blowby is more or less the teakettle effect. it huffs and puffs, which i think the reason the airfilter has soo much oil in it. anything i can do to lower the oil consumption by the air filter.

arc,

U might have to overhaul or rebuild the engine to stop the blowby. With that many miles, what do U expect?

I had great success in removing rear glass by slicing lip off rubber seal from the INSIDE.

Nice idea....how much ware is on the passenger side, most likly not much, espically the lock. Which door usually needs a door check strap? I'v not done a door handle, maybe I'll start now.

i was not complaining, but the blowby is less than other diesel benz engines i have seen, with way less miles. it must have had a rebuild at some point in its life, but i dont know how many miles it has been since then.

710K is amazing - I thought Strider had a lot of miles. Sure be nice to know the engine's history.

wow, tough crowd.

the only thing i really hate to see is folks degrading other folks. pretty much everyone here is just trying to help. who cares if he doesnt know the correct term for crown. if we disagree we can surely do so politely. if you think a post is worthless the best thing to do is ignore it (like everybody does mine!) unless it contains anything potentially harmful. then you can disagree politely. this all is supposed to be fun, and helpful, and sometimes theraputic!
