i know that some roads are slanted to some small degree. but my car has lots of free play that has nothing to do with the road i travel on. i am not claiming to be an expert, otherwise i would not be asking questions.
if i want to take the rear windshield out, do i first remove the chrome and then have to cut the rubber? also the driver side door lock wont turn with the key. i have to unlock the passenger door first and then reach through to open the driver door. is there a cheap way to fix these locks? i want to avoid having to rekey the whole car.

Your steering wheel needs to be centered by a good alignment shop. Normally they center the wheel in the car AND then do the alignment.

The syncros are worn and heavy oil wont make the problem go away. I would try using Red Line MTL. "wheel is turned to about 1.5 o'clock (if it were a watch) if i want to drive straight. the steering is really loose, " Some times when the steering wheel is not lined up its an indicator that an alignment was done by a shop that did'nt have the proper tools and knowledge for working on a Mercedes. just to clarify...The allen adjustment is turned CCW to tighten the steering, but go easy.

Congrats on your "new" 240D... and I thought mine had a lot of miles on the odometer! Here's the link to the oil dipstick seal, hopefully that takes care of your oil leak.

Mobil 1 gear oil, which I use in my differential, is probably almost as good. Here's an idea for your door lock problem... try swapping the driver and passenger outside door handles. They are interchangeable. The inside handles can also be swapped front to back. I did this a few months ago when my door panels were taken apart for repainting, just to squeeze a little more life out of the existing handles instead of getting new ones. Typical frugal Yankee... well i took the lock appart and just cleaned it up. it works great now, and that makes it alot nicer.
thanks for the link to the dip stick seal. i will order that. the previous owner filled out the high mileage award, and mercedes sent him the 250k, 500k, 750k and the 1million k award. but there was a small problem, the box and certificate stated 1million kilometers, but the hood award is actually the 1 million MILE award. it is nice to have that, but i want the 1 mil k award on the grill first. the air filter has lots of oil in it. the blowby is more or less the teakettle effect. it huffs and puffs, which i think the reason the airfilter has soo much oil in it. anything i can do to lower the oil consumption by the air filter.

arc,
U might have to overhaul or rebuild the engine to stop the blowby. With that many miles, what do U expect? P E H |

I had great success in removing rear glass by slicing lip off rubber seal from the INSIDE.

Nice idea....how much ware is on the passenger side, most likly not much, espically the lock. Which door usually needs a door check strap? I'v not done a door handle, maybe I'll start now.
