1985 300 Td
 

I am currently driving (on loan from a friend who wants to sell the car to me) a 1985 300D Turbo.

Besides badly needing new shocks, I am wondering if the accelleration from stand still of this car is normal. I find the starting accell veryyyy slow. I havent timed it but it may be 20 sec from 0-60. Is this normal? Once it gets going it picks up fairly well. I clean the Banjo bolt already (which wasn't really that dirty). Is there any thing else I should check to see if I can get more pep out of this car?

Doesn't turn off
 

I just opened the fuse box to see if there was any blown fuses that maybe tied to the turbo but they all look ok. After I did this, I started the car and noticed the engine would not turn off. I had to open hood and press the stop lever to stop it. I did it a 2nd time and did the same thing. The only thing I did was open the fuse box which should not have anything to do with it not turning off. ANy thoughts?

while messing with fuse box, I bet you jarred some of the vaccum lines around/off. Go back and check all the vaccum connections and be sure they are plugged in and snug in their connections. The switch is tied to the vaccum system and that is tied to the fuel cut-off...simple explaination. Go check your simple stuff!

BTW, not for ranting but the car you are trying is a 300D not a 300TD (wagon)
if you give the year of the car we don't need to know if it is turbo or not, because from 82 there are all turbo!
Now on your 0-60 times: 20 seconds is a bit slow but that maybe normal for a car that has been sitting. drive it on the highway for 30 minutes full blast (italian tune-up), adjust valves (german tune-up, instruction in many places in this forum), diesel purge. and you should gain... hell at least 2 seconds on you drag timing. :D

You were correcto, my friend! I checked and found a line popped out of this yellow fitting located next to the brake booster
:o . I put it back, started the car and turned off with the ignition key. I must have messed it up not with the fuse box but when I was tracing the line going to the banjo bolt. I was still trying to figure out if there were any dirty or plugged up lines that may be causing the slow start of the car.

also sometimes they want to start off in second instead of first and this will be excruciatingly slow!

Thats actually how it seems like..... more like 3rd or 4th gear. But it must be first because I count at least 2 if not 3 upshifts. I am begining to be resigned that thats how it really is. I spoke with someone today who has an 81 240D. He said his pedal is on the floor when he starts and the car slowly ramps up.

Uhmm, actually there is quite a difference between a 300D turbo and a 240D.
Do a search on "alda". That is usually your very low end issue until you spin up the turbo.

Also, '85 models have a whole lot more vacuum stuff than the other years......
