Question Idle is suddenly slower

I searched the threads for a possible answer before I asked this. I had the tires rotated and balanced a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday. When I went to work on Monday there was a small puddle of diesel under the front of the engine. Being late for work I went ahead and drove with no problems. when I left work that evening, there was another small puddle of fuel in approximately the same location under the car. Since then, there has been no fuel leakage that I can find. I checked the clear tubes from the filter and found one that appeared to be slightly wet. Over the last two weeks, the idle has came down to about 500 RPM from about 650, and there seems to be a slight decrease in acceleration although once up to speed everything seems OK. My mileage has remained the same allowing for AC. I added some fuel addtitive because I had neglected it the past couple of tankfuls. Sometimes in the morning, the engine will die but will start right back up and then settle into a smooth idle.
I suspect the fuel filter, but would like to know where the fuel that leaked out came from. The PO said it could be the clear lines from the filter, but they didn't appear to be leaking or brittle.
I am going to change the fuel filter probably this weekend and see if that helps. Any suggestions???
Fritz is a 95 E300D.
Thanks
