If I get this right then the black poly no longer attaches to anything so I don't need to worry about that?? The smaller black tube also goes thru the firewall without connection in the area under the dash. The other end connects to the vacuum control valve if I see this correctly. Does that make sense?

Yes, the large black one with the filter you just remove and follow it over to the other emission crap. You'll pull off a BUNCH of tubing.

Vacuum " Schematics "... might help ya !

Although these are probably not all that you will need, why not try the following link and take a look at the vacuum diagrams:

Go to the "Vacuum Schematics" menu entry in the left side of the Home Page... then year and model.
These are for use in working on the tranny vacuum components and EGR.

I have been looking at the vac diagrams quite a bit. It looks as though my car has been connected a little bit diffferently than the diagrams-maybe by the previous owner. Also the engine diagrams do not seem to have info on connecting the door lock and the climate control stuff. I believe the 2 yellow are the door locks and the green/yellow are the climate control. I am not sure where to connect them to what tube in the engine compartment.

Yorba Linda [SpyGuy], I trust you found…

the diagram at www.PeterSchmid.Com, the one that is titled Functional diagram of vacuum line routing… Model Year 1985 California Version ?

It is clear that CA really didn’t do its citizens any favors when they mandated complete re-engineering of these cars back then!! I found the EGR system on my 80 CA model 300D all but impossible to make work without causing major engine power/smoke issues! I'll have to get back to that another day.

I have NOT yet found a source of good Vac Diagrams for the door lock etc systems… at least one that also shows the engine compartment connections for these systems as well [ locks, eng. Shut-down on ignition, Environ.Etc ]. Maybe someone else has some sources they can tell us about!

I have a 1980 300D I will soon be looking to solve vacuum leaks in here soon!

Thanks to all the exellent help, I think I am finally getting this figured out. Maybe a little more info and I'll have it:

1. There is a black tube that connects to the bottom of the vacuum control valve which is mounted on the injection pump.The diagram simple says it's a vent line to vehicle interior. Does that mean it goes thru the firewall and simply exists without connecting to anything?

2. There are 2 black tubes that are connected to the Electric-switch-over valve and the Electric vacuum control valve. These two things are located farely near the driver's side headlight.The two black tubes run rearward into a Y thus becoming one. Where does this one black tube go?

Once these are solved I'll just fix a few of the old connections and I'm done!!

SpyGuy, I can help you wit "1." but not "2.".......

and you got it right. The lower vacuum line from the Vacuum Control Valve [ VCV ] does go through the firewall and "daylights" there, connecting to nothing... that is unless you want to put some kind of filter on it to keep debris fron entering the vacuum system and possibly causing the VCV to not properly take in a measured amount of air [ " intake venting "].

IF you ever have this line out completely and then shove it through the firewall, take care not to introduce debris in shoving it back through. I recommend that you blow air through it after shoving it through and before reconnecting it to the VCV.

I have no knowledge of your subject in "2." and canNOT.

Thanks Sam. Hopefully question 2. will be answered soon. Also someone mentioned the stop or shut-off lever if the engine won't shut down. Where is that guy located? I have had the run-on situation but was hoping once I got all the vacuum tubes properly connected that might go away.

As best I can tell my final mystery tube connects to nothing, as in it is supposed to simply hang in the atmosphere without a connection. Bothers my brain but that's the way they designed it. Thanks for all the help.

One tube connects to the Switchover vacuum converter. The other tube connects to the Vacuum converter. The tubes leave the said units and are merged into one tube which the diagram indicates to vent into the vehicle interior. This according to the diagram for 1985 300D California. This means I have 2 tubes that go thru the firewall and simply attach to nothing but air. The other one comes off the Vacuum control valve attached to the injector pump.

Yep, you are right. After looking at that diagram...

I count my blessings that my 300D and 240D are 1980 models with a much simplier vacuum system in the engine compartment!

I also note the "vent filter" on this combined vacuum line that terminates in the assenger compartment! I thought such filters were just an old mechanic's trick!

What's next with your beastie?

Next are a few replacement parts already on their way for the vac connections. Then the new AC compressor goes in. I sure hope the climate control pods work. If not I'll rebuild them. After that, it's on to the veggie conversion. I recently converted my boat so I'm in the veggie processing mode, hence the reason I picked up the MB in the first place. I keep reminding myself this is all for fun!
