Question oil pressure?

So i was driving to Chicago from my town in saint charles (about 1 hour west of the city). i was crusing at 70 b/c i didnt want to take any chances, after crusing that way for 20-40 mins or so, when i put the clutch in to come to a stop, my oil pressure dropped to a lil less than 30. Im used to it dropping to no lower than 30 after it has been fully warmed up, but this kind of scared me.

so i pulled over to a rest stop and bought some oil just in case, checked the oil. and it didnt seem like it had any less.

also, when i restarted it agian, then heat jumped up to a lil more than 174 deg. Farienghit (sp). but cooled back down to operating temp, in about 4 to 5 secs.

any ideas?????

Perfectly normal for your 1983 240D.

80ºC (the thermostst for your car according to FastLane, our sponsor) ) = 176ºF. So you may actually be LOW on your "normal" operating temp. May need a new thermostat.

~30psi = ~2 bar (well above Mercedes lower limit for idle oil pressure).

I actually think the 87º-94ºC thermostat might be better, but what the hey.

I find that on a hot day when I shut the car off and turn it back on, the engine temp. is close to 100 C. It quickly goes back down to 90C, though, which is where it normally runs on my car.

I think I read somewhere that the oil pressure is OK even at .8 bar when the engine is idling. When my car is hot it will usually drop to about 1.5 bar when idling.

Mine do that too, I think it is just the stagnant coolant in the block heating up when the engine stops. As soon as the coolant starts to circulate, the temp goes back to normal. Don't worry about it, it's normal.

I agree that anything over about 1 bar (15 psi) is OK, mine usually idles around 1.5 or 2.0 when its hot. It seems to vary a little based on temperature, idle speed, and type of oil. I've never seen one actually go down to 0.8.

+1 all my cars do this to some extent. The Porsche and the Mercedes seem to do it more than the Volvo.

Not a problem. Mine dropped below 30 for the fist time today too... to ~27, I am happy it isn't 15.

+1, but I will add that 176ºF is when it STARTS opening. Correct me if I am wrong but it is fully open at 203ºF (95ºC).
