AT starting out in second gear ? 1983 300SD
I just purchased a 1983 300SD . The automatic transmission seems to start out in 2nd but down shifts to first and runs through the gears fine . Where do I start with troubleshooting and fix the problem ? - Thanks

I have read on here that it is normal...but I think it was for a 190d. Not sure one your model. I say search a bit though...i'll try to find that 190 post...
But it was easier on the engine or tranny or something...I forget...but it wasn't a problem...it was supposed to be like that. -Mike |

Mine sits in second at a dead stop, then drops to first as soon as you hop on the pedal. Why? I do not know. I'd rather have it sit in first... I may swap in an extra SDL valve body I have into my SD. Shift points will be just a tad higher only at WOT.

Several folks have noticed this on occasion.
I have noticed it on occasion on the SDL. I don't believe that it's normal. However, I'm at a loss as to the cause. It might be as simple as the Bowden cable being slightly tight..........but.........it's just a WAG. |
