83 300SD AC needs repair should I try?

I have recently purchased a compressor and a drier for my 83' 300SD. I know the old compressor is bad because I saw the previous owner had snipped the belt and also knocked the compressor housing off that was rattling. My question is what is the best way to attack putting a good used compressor and new drier on my vehicle. In other words do I do the entire nut and bolt work and then bring to a shop to have R-12 charged? I have done a lot on this car already and this is the last thing to make it perfect. Should I just go ahead give the parts to a person with more experience and pay for the labor? Advice is greatly appreciated!

Do ask a local AC outfit what they want to evacuate and charge the system.
Here in Southern California I was quoted $100. That was reasonable to me.
It probably was worth $140.00.
Ask then, how much extra for the compressor and drier install, it may be so cheap that it is not worth your time.

Doubt they will guarantee the work though (used compressor).

Important question - is the system still charged ?
If it is, you will need to have it dis-charged using the proper equipment (for legal/enviromental reasons).
That hundred I quoted above included evacuating the system, then me switching parts, and then the shop recharging (price of $100 did not include freon).

Without evacuating equipment I have spent $25 on flusher, $17 on vacuum pump, and $20 for a set of guages. This gets me set up to recharge a system. (this and my time).

You can do this yourself. If you like working on your car.
You won't spend more than $200 tops getting it done by someone.

Thanks a bunch! I am pretty sure the system is purged. Is there a way to be sure? Also do you know where I might find a step by step tutorial describing how to do the compressor and drier? I would love to do as much as I can and then pull it up and say just a recharge please

Yes, start reading all you can on it... it's not nearly as bad as it seems. Just labor time.

The tools you can get from ebay. Flush gun, vac pump, gauges for maybe $200 shipped!

Autozone also has an AC service and repair DVD, and it is a really good basic information on how to service, repair, replace AC system components. It's only $6 bucks or so, and worth every penny plus more......
