Brazil - Petrobras pioneers vegoil diesel mix technology

Petrobras has tested and approved a new process to produce diesel fuel from vegetable oil processing in its refineries. Dubbed H-Bio-Diesel, it will be developed as an option for diesel fuel supplies in the next couple of years.

The outcome of research carried out by the Petrobras Research and Development Center (Cenpes) in the last 18 months, this refining process uses vegetable oil as an input to get diesel fuel through the hydrogenation of a vegetable oil and mineral oil mix. Recent industrial tests performed at the Gabriel Passos Refinery (Regap) confirmed the process' technical and commercial viability, and a patent has already been applied for from the National Industrial Property Institute (NIPI).

Petrobras' Supply Director, Paulo Roberto Costa, mentioned that among the main advantages the innovation leverages is the extraordinary social impact the increased demand for soybeans and other grains will have on the country's rural areas and, thus, on national agribusiness. He also highlighted the progressive reduction of diesel imports with the increased offer of H-Bio-Diesel in the market. "Consolidating this new fuel option will give the country more peace of mind regarding domestic supply, and it is a better quality alternative than the one that is currently used," he said, commenting further: "We can already say we will plant diesel in Brazil."

Petrobras pioneers vegoil diesel mix technology

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (Reuters) - Brazil's state oil company Petrobras said on Friday it would introduce a pioneering low-sulphur diesel producing technology involving vegetable oils at two refineries by 2008.

Petroleo Brasileiro SA Supplies Director Paulo Roberto Costa told a news conference the so-called H-Bio technology will combine diesel fractions from distillation, cracking and retarded coking with soy oil and hydrogen as raw materials to churn out high-quality diesel with mineral fuel qualities.

"It's a groundbreaking technology and we've asked for patents. Vegetable oil substitutes diesel fractions and adds value ... It's a revolution for Brazil, and I'm sure it's going to spread in the world from here," Costa said.

"We'll be planting diesel from now on. It's a very positive marriage between agriculture and oil," he said, adding that the plan should give "an extraordinary boost" to the farm sector in world commodity powerhouse Brazil.

Brazil is one of the few countries in the world to be energy independent or nearly independent. They use alcohol blends to power gas engines and now they are going to use veg oil blends to power diesels.

They are running "Flex-fuel" cars that can run on E85 (85% ethanol). The cars are made in Detriot and sent to Brazil.

We should be the ones wanting to get off foreign oil. We should yelling "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!" Lobyists are great for America, aren't they?

Of course, it helps when you have vast rainforests that you can kill off to plant soybeans...but we won't talk about that part.

There is no free lunch, everything is a tradeoff.

Clearly the best answer is hemp-seed oil. But there are plenty of political hurdles with that one.

That's great , but i would still rather get my UCO for free, and filter it myself.

Wonder how much it will cost in USD per gallon???
