So it was his first crack at painting. Like anything people make mistakes thats how we learn. Why not give it another shot?

Lots of good replies and suggestions. And there was Hatteras' first sentence also.....(which has now been changed)
My son graduated from high school this past weekend, so we no longer have access to the auto body shop (not that it did us much good)
My son is not like many of us. He likes his truck, but it isn't an interest of his. He just did mine 'cause he had the class and I asked him. My expectations were low, but I didn't think the instructor would let this happen.
We have a good father/son relationship. He has lived with mom for the last 12 years or so, but they are just 4 miles away. He wants to be a youth minister, and he plays in a Christian band, so his interests are there.
Mine are out in the driveway, like many of yall, so I'll figure something out, and am confident of yall's help when I ask.
This is a driver, not a collection piece after all.

Have I mentioned lately that it doesn't smoke.....

I apologize if my first sentence seemed rude, I certainly did not intend it to be that way. My point is I don't know how to paint, I'd expect my first paint job to be about as you described. My SD was done about 5 years ago at a trade school and they did a fine job. Although it was done by a school, so you can see where they messed up with prep, spraying, and sanding. For some reason they didn't get the hood back on right. But the owner got one heck of a deal on the job.

If you want to give someone a shot at learning and save a few bucks sometimes you luck out and it comes out real nice. Other times, well thats how we learn. If you want perfect the first time, farm the work out to the pro's. Although as we have all seen that doesn't guarantee much.

Shop class

I learned my lesson once. I let my brother replace the Universal joints in my driveshaft in his high school shop class. The price was right. Just the price of the parts and the school even paid for some of the supplies needed.

One cold rainy day I was bringing some friends back to their house and I decided oh Ill be right back I don't nead my coat the driveshaft broke loose and started pummeling the underside of my car so hard that the back seat floor raised up several inches in the process. Not only was I stranded but I got to walk several miles with my friends in a very cold misty rain. Now I always carry backup outerwear with me and I avoid letting my car be serviced by Moe, Larry and Shemp in high school shop class.

Paint is one of those tricky things that I would not even attempt myself even though I do my own Abstract paintings. I would not want my car to end up looking like one of my masterpieces. Even though automotive painters don't have a reputation like "Artists" like myself they have a great amount of skill to do what they do.

But the bright side of this situation is a car is just like a canvas.... If you don't like where you ended up the first time a little jesso (sandpaper in your case) and you can paint right over what you had for a new chance...... Several of my most beautiful paintings at home have not so beautiful paintings underneath them......

The runs can be fixed (I think) and the paint being the wrong color is not your son's fault. It was either mixed wrong or the old paint on the rest of the car had turned a different color with age: I have seen red paint turn to orange with age (oxyadation).

Well, the primary job of paint is to prevent corossion.

There is a spray-on mask available now that could possibly help control overspray if anyone else here sprays paint.

One of problems with learning body work is that the prep work is most of the job and it tedious and gets old. It is a natural tendency to rush to the spray booth. Most people are never taught to match nozzles, needles, humidity, temperature, viscosity, etc, before they spray.

I never read about the cure for your smoke, I'll search.
edit: The smoker is a parts car?
edit again: Sold on eBay.
Sad day. The Smoker is gone....

I sold the smoker on ebay. A guy from Florida bought it, along with about 8 other vehicles in a 2 week period. 2 Mercedes, and things like airline refueling trucks, mobile cranes, luggage movers, etc.....
Who knows..... My last image of it is the guy driving down the road, disappearing past the tree line, smoke lingering in the air.......

Sounds like my Buick Skylark after I threw a rod!

Picture a pristine Vermont Mountain view. All quite and peaceful. Snow quietly falling on the landscape.
Then.............Here I come with a thrown rod and a cloud of smoke billowing from my car for a mile back.

I hear you Jim. Diverse interests are harder to breach. I have four daughters and no sons. Believe me it was and is different. I was kind of hoping that the new owners might have let you know why the car quit smoking if it did. If not perhaps it will visit ebay again. Or it will always just be old smokey. Kind of funny what an old pile of inert metal and parts can represent to us. Probably no real logic but thats what makes us car buffs I guess.

Thumbs up

Yes, cars mean a lot to me and it's sad to see some go.

Anyway, check out this month's Car Craft... they have a good article on building a 400" small block and about color sanding + buffing.

Look at the bright side. At least you didn't have the car in to the shop class for new cylinder liners.
