How much time to R&R an Engine? a 617. /w Transmission for someone fairly mechanically inclined?

4 hours out, 4 hours in. What goes on from the time you get the old engine out until the new engine is ready to go in depends on too many things.

No 116 with tilt steering. No 126 with tilt steering. MB didn't figure out tilt steering and warm air from center vents until the 140

4 hours doesn't include looking in the manual, labeling, taking pictures, wondering where that hose was attached, etc.

I was planning on some "beautifying" of the engine and engine compartment, and to hunt down some persistant oil leaks and seepage, no better way then to clean and re-paint the engine!
and it'll look pretty!

I will say this, I'm a good wrench, but had never touched a Mercedes engine until my 240. It took me all of 2 days (taking my time to be careful) to remove the 616 with bad rod, clean up and swap brackets/accy's onto the 617 replacement, figure out what I needed to get the conversion to happen, get parts and have new engine reinstalled ready for adjustments. It was really a very simple and easy swap in my opinion, should be even easier without the conversion factor involved.

I have the same experience level and did the same project. I totally agree.

I must also say, now that I am able to enjoy driving it, it was a project well worth it, rusty as she may be...
