changed fuel filters today
i changed fuel filters today.. and learned a little something..
1. I changed the plastic prefilter first... then i started the engine... (i did not have to use the prime pump) 2. next i changed the main fuel filter.... I filled it with transmission fluid.. (i did not have to use the prime pump) So this made my fliter change quick and easy....if you change both filters and replace them dry... you will have to use your prime pump but by doing it this way i saved some time and it was quick and easy.:D |
I used tranny fluid yesterday to fill the filter, worked great, but it's best to do it hot.
|
it was hot
it was hot,
i posted this because the first time i changed my filters it took forever... and we had loosened banjo fittings and all kinds of difficulty... i started to use the primer pump today but it was too tight to open so i did it this way... and it was easy and quick.... now that i have an easy way to do this i may do it every month. |
just wondering what is the advantage of using trans fluid to prime the main filter?
this is how i do mine, if i have diesel fuel available, i do it the same way like how you do it with atf... or, i install the spin on filter but about 1/8" before the rubber ring seats, then hand pump prime, then when diesel starts to overflow on the filter, tighten it up and then start it and starts right up. |
Tranny fluid acts like an injector cleaner. Its cheap and it cleans things out.

really!? i didn't know that. does it smoke white? |
Be careful with that ATF. Using it in excessive quantities has been known to cause injector coking.
|
It is an age old trick. I fill my spin-on filter with it when I change it.

yeah, thanks! hence the reason i'm asking about this subject. what about using the real injector cleaner like diesel purge or lucas, instead of atf? |
Yeah ATF causes some carbon buildup apparently. I ran some two cycle oil through mine too. :D Didn't seem to do much... my SD needs new nozzles.
|
My wrench said to fill the spin-on filter with diesel purge or one of the other "magic" fluids. I'm still waiting for my filters to clog up from running B100.

Obviously it'll work better as that's what it's made to do. ATF is just hyd oil that'd got a red dye. :) |
filter
well inorder not to prime.. and for me thats important..
i dont want to break my old primer pump... so inorder not to prime you must put something in the spin on filter... if you run diesel then you could put some of that in there but the easiest thing for me is atf... and since it cleans injectors i get the added benefit... You could also pour veggie oil in it... lubro molly might work....as well... but you have to put some sort of fuel in the filter... |
I think the best reason to use ATF is if you get any on you it wont stink to high heaven. My friend was an over the road trucker and he always had fuel filters and ATF on had for that reason.
|
Originally, I started filling my filters with ATF because I didn't have any diesel around and I was to lazy to syphon some out of the car. It's just an easy cheap convienient way of priming the system w/ out lots of pumping.
