Interesting piston crown.

What the heck is an EGR cooler?

I would guess it cools down the exhaust gasses before running them back through

thats what it sounds like to me also. But would it use the same coolant as the engine?

this is a really cool video.

BTW - Conversions left me with it putting out about 140 horsepower and getting about 44 miles to the gallon.

Interesting. Its operating at a 16 to 1 compression ratio. Our 617 operate at a 22 to 1 compression ratio.
Also the injectors are operationg at 1600Bar. Or 23,206 PSI. Thats some pressure.

You're both wrong.

Its 21.5 : 1. I have the owner's manual for an '85 300D right in front of me, now (from the first car I ever owned).

The 603 engine has an even 22 : 1.

BTW, it seems most common rail direct injection diesels have that piston crown shape.

Wow my thoughts as an engineer. 1)3mm wall separation beween cylinders 2) reducing diesel ignition to 16.9/1 3) aluminum block All engineering kudos. The MB engineers may be in a run for their title to best designed diesel.

The negative - will this work in the sooty world of diesel ? I'm sure the block head and valve train will be rock solid, but I can't imagine this engine having low maintenance especially with its sensors and controls, like flap valves (similar to my 606.) My guess is this will be a typical Honda - great for 100k and then all h@@@ breaks loose, if it is not properly maintained.

My old Perkins Diesel, circa 1956, had cups in the pistons like that. That is where the fuel starts to burn because the fuel is injected into this cup. Its kind of like a prechamber built into the piston.

I was impressed. Ummm...the video dates back to 2003... Have any of you heard of a Honda owner with this engine? (or seen one for sale anywhere?)

Could it be they can't sell it here, because our refineries haven't caught up yet with the Europeans as far as Diesel quality goes?

3mm....dang....that is not a lot. Certainly way less that I would've expected. And 1600 bar is way more than I would've guessed.

Every direct injection diesel I have ever seen has had pistons shaped this way.

sixto: they have that bowl on the top of the piston so you arn't shooting your fuel directing into the pistion and so you can have large squish areas to create turbulance to aid combustion.

97dieseldriver: Have you even seen a closed deck aluminum block? I am trying to think, but can't recall one. It's funny that they went with aluminum while Jag is is using CGI. Seems like two completely different directions...

I doubt that they will have as many problems with soot with low sulfer diesel.

They may not be able to sell these in NY due to some freaks in government worried about how much less tax money from fuel will be coming in and all that environmental stuff. If they are sooo worried about the environment why can my soot and NOx belcher(in comparison to the latest technology) even be registered and un-smogged?? These politicians and Air quality morons have things all messed up. It is rumored that the Blue-Tec won't be available here either Another reason to get the hell out of here......

well to build a stone wall, you have to start by laying the first stone. eventually virtually all of the vehicles will be clean.

in the mean time we have a long tradition of allowing "existing non conforming" entities exist. it is true in buildings, zoning and engines. thank goodness.

I was concerned the funny pistons would be a nightmare when/if carbon builds in the cup.
Not sure if it is the same 2.2 but I drove a euro civic w/ a 2.2 diesel and boy is it a nice motor...quiet (almost too quiet) and powerful.
Not sure on the source but the Mazda 2.0 (or2.2 I forget) diesel in the Mazda 5 w/ 6 speed was wonderful too.
