I was finishing up some minor details in the engine box this morning, vacuum lines and wires, and ran into a small snafu. The engine that came with the car to drop in, came from a newer 300D. The wiring harness was different @ the connector that goes to the glow plug module. No big deal, I just read what each wire was labeled as on their respective modules and what pin each was in, on both old and new and used my old connector shell with the properly reinserted pins of the new harness. Now comes the question, on the old 240 engine, between the glow plugs there were 2 sensors, at the module they went to pins 6 & 8, labeled as "B" and "NTC" on the module. the new 300 engine has only one sensor, which used to go to a separate single pin plug by the module on it's original car. I determined it is the same as the rearmost of the 2 sensors on the 240 engine, and soldered a pin to it so it could be installed in the connector to my original 240 module. What I now need to know, is what does the extra sensor (frontmost on the 240 engine) do? and is it important enough that I need to remove it from the old engine and hook it up in the new engine? This sensor went to pin 6, labeled "B" on the module. The car and old engine are 1980 240D, the new engine I (think) came from an 86 300D (going by date stamps found on some of the vacuum and injector hoses). Hopefully I havent confused everyone by now, this is the last detail of the conversion I need to address. Thanks in advance.
