I need help with benz 1985 300DT
Hello,
I know I might not be posting in the right area but I need some help. I have a 1985 300dt and it has some problems in which no one seems to be able to help me with. I was hoping someone here might be able to. First thing is when I turn my car off it take a good while for it to shut all the way off. Also when I start it up it idles very hard. Shakes the car a lot. If anyone might have a couple things in mind please reply back. Also my car smokes whiteish/blueish. (from the tailpipe.) Please please someone help me. |

The slow shut-down is likely the result of a vacuum leak. Could be in the door lock system, climate control system, EGR, transmission or brake booster. The door locks are the most likely culprit. Do they work?
The shaking at idle can often be reduced greatly by adjusting the governor idle pin (aka rack idle bolt) at the rear of the injection pump. You might conduct a search for that topic. |

Open the hood and look at the tubing coming out of the firewall area in front of where the driver sits. Look for the yellow vacuum hoses. Disconnect them and plug the line where you disconnected them from. See if that improves the stopping.
Does it "start hard" whether the engine is cold or up to temperature?

Sometime it does not start right away, you knwo the light that comes on when you turn the key over and you have to wait till it goes out to turn the car over all the way well sometimes it never come on. Also sometimes when I do turn it over it does not like to go. For example: a couple of time more and more it seems when i turn it over it does not like to go it takes a lot of work to just get to 30 and then it wont go any faster. I dont know what is happening

Sounds like you probably need to replace the glow plugs in regards to the hard start issue.

Is changing the glow plugs a do-it-yourself job?

It is. You will want to remove and test them. Just replace the ones that don't light up on the end. You will need to remove the fuel line to the injectors, remove the wire to the gp's and then you can get to the gp's to remove them. Test them by jumping one wire to the portion of the gp where the wire screws on and the other wire to the body of the gp. They should glow red on the very end. You will need to hold them with pliers during the testing because they get hot. Do a search on here and you can find out all about them.

Oh yeah I almost forgot to ask about my heating. My heater only knows one setting. Hot and hotter. And I have no A/C never had any since I bought the car and with leather seats its sorta a must have. If someone could tell me what I would need to check or buy to get the heater to blow cooler air or the parts I need for the A/C I would love to find out. Thanks.

Sounds like your car will not go over 30mph. If so start by changing the fuel filters out if you have never done them. Not a good situation to evaluate things from. Might also have some air getting into the fuel system. Check that little hand pump for leaking as well.

also check the bajo bolts.. they might be clogged.. the banjo bolts are located on the intake manifold and on the ALDA check the diy articles or dieselgiant.com for a diy on cleaning them
