Adsit Co follow up...

So, I am considering a rebuilt motor from Adsit Co. I am including the description of their rebuild process as provided to me by Adsit Co, and Metric Motors. The cost differential between these two companies is significant.

The motor would go in a 1982 MB 240D four speed.

Metric Motors:$5300 + 500 core + shipping + tax (I live in CA) Est $6200???

New pistons, New oil pump, New rod and main bearings, New timing chain and sliding rails, New rod bushings, New crank seals, New freeze plugs, New water pump (on V-8 only), New oil pump drive bushings, New valve guides, New valves, New valve springs, New rocker arms, New ball stud adj., New hydraulic lifters, New chain tensioner, Complete gasket set. New or reground camshaft. Replace as needed or new: Timing gears, Flywheel ring gear, Misc. hardware. Block machined to exacting factory specs. Bore and hone cylinders, surface deck. Connecting rods reconditioned, Reground and balanced crankshaft assembly. Cylinder Head is completely remachined including pressure test, resurface, cut seats, hone new guides to size. Installation of cylinder head including valve adjustments. Diesels also include: rebuilt & calibrated Injection Pump, New injector nozzles, New prechambers, New rocker arm shafts, New glow plugs.

Adsit Co: Price Quote $3694.50 (delivered including core charge)

Machine work: Bore block - Grind crank if necessary - grind valves, cut valve seats - resize rods - check valve spring tension

Parts - (all new unless otherwise specified):

Pistons and rings - Rod and main bearings - Oil pump - Timing Chain - Timing chain tensioner - timin chain rails - camshafts -lifters - valves and springs as necessary - all gaskets and seals - rebuilt injection pump - rebuilt injectors - glow plugs - rebuilt vacuum pump - water pump

The engine comes as a long block with the valve cover and oil pan. The engine will aslo be test run before shipping.

Just curious-
How much for a new genuine MB crated OM616?
That would be the solution, if money weren't so important.
I'd avoid Adsit, post-purchase customer service is horrible(from what I have read).

A factory MB crated 617 motor isnt much more than the Metric Motors remanufactured engine. Not sure about 616 engine prices, but I would want the best quality motor possible- if you are going to drop 4K on a motor, may as well invest a few more K to get the best avail. if it financially possible- Its the bone, soul, and heart of the car.

Just an opinion, but you have similar chances for service longevity with either a rebuild engine from one of these two vendors or a stock used engine from a rusted out 240D. The reason I say this is because the factory in Germany has the tools and experience to make the parts right, put the parts together right, and this is further demonstrated by the mileage on the used car.

You can get a junker 240D for under $500 and chances are good the engine is still very good. Then you've got various spare parts to boot.

The used engines are just too readily and cheaply available to make a vendor rebuild economical.

Metric does more, thats about what I would expect. Now call your local MB dealer and price out a long block.

MB has the best warranty I know that.

IMHO, get a metric motors rebuild if you are going to keep the car. If not, install a junker.
