Looks a lot like what happened to mine. Can you tell it there is any damage to the valves? Mine only jumped one tooth and the valves were all OK.

Yes, the current theory is that the bolt backed out resulting in destruction of the vacuum pump and the chain jump. The valves appear to be fine. It seems the bolt backed out and was bent when it ripped the guts out of the vacuum pump.
Interestingly, the bent bolt had no locktite on the threads. Maybe MB does not use locktite during assembly. I do not think the plate that attaches to the timing gear had ever been replaced, although the vacuum pump had been replaced about 2 years ago. Larry 1981 300SD 1979 300SD |

Larry, I thought in one of your first posts that you found excess valve clearance on the engine.
How is the oil pump drive sprockets and chain for the oil pump? I would disassemble the pump and ck for damage/scoring due to small fragments that got past the screen on the pickup.

Why Did This Happen?
Has anyone seen this happen before? I wonder why a bolt in the timing gear would back out into the vacuum pump. This SEEMS to be the reason for all the damage (see photos). I have researched all maintenance records since new. The vacuum pump was replaced, but there is no indication that the plate attached to the timing gear was replaced.

No idea. My pump failure did not involve that bolt. It's hard to believe it would come loose for no reason after all that time.

I think this GVB guy is nuts, and I don't understand what his motivation is for trying to convince you the engine is "toast"....
I've seen worse damage done, and the engine was still repairable. I do agree with checking out the oil pump. In fact, since you're going to be into some serious work anyway, I'd go ahead and replace the oil pump, just to be sure. Mike

I have no idea why the bolt backed out. Usually you rebuild vac pumps on 617's so unless you have paper showing it was replaced with a new one. That pump was probably rebuilt at some point. Ouch though thats some pretty major damage.
I wonder if we are seeing a trend of 617 vac pump failures? If I had a 617 I planned on keeping I would either do a major overhual of the pump, or replace it with a new one.
