Fun Diesel
Well we did it! A few friends and I were discussing a while back that we would like to see how much you could warm up a mercedes diesel. Being in the mechanical trade, I decided that a 3.0 litre turbo diesel would be a great candidate. (The fact that I had one in my garage played a great part in my decision). We tore it down and cleaned up good. then we had new cylinder sleeves pressed in. We then sent the block out and had it align bored and decked. I had a custom set of forged stainless rods made with the oil injectors, a new set of pistons made. We put in step-gap rings after having the assembly balanced. As far as the head, we had it machined to true it up and a good valve grind done. Before we assembled it though, we flow matched the ports on the intake and exhaust side. We then had the fuel pump gone through by a friend of mine who worked in Germany for MB for over 20 years. (This guy is a magician when it comes to MB Diesels). After assembly, we had him tune the thing and set up the turbo. Oh My God!!
I am impressed to no end. My 83 123 will now run with pretty much any street gasser and is somewhat quieter. (pleasent suprise). Acceleration is astounding for a diesel. I haven't had the opportunity to dyno it yet, but I would say the HP/torque number have been increased by probably 60-75 percent. I don't have a turbo boost guage, so I have no idea as to the boost pressure and Uve did not let me in on the fuel pressure numbers. I may blow this thing up next week, but right now it is a tremendous amount of fun.

how much did all of this cost you?.. but your not on par with the finns yet

I'm curious about the temperatures.
The addition of that much horsepower to an already marginal cooling system must cause some serious temperature issues. That needle must climb over 105°C every time you mash that pedal............. I'd also be curious as to exactly what he did to the IP. The standard pump isn't good for much more than about 150 hp or so, without larger elements. |

maybe they rebuilt it which brought the stock power levels back..
