EGR 606 turbo mod experiment

Well, with all the debate on if the egr mod will work for the 606 turbo, I decided to try it. I am glad I did because it put things into perspective for me. I took off my intake and disconnected the egr tube and bent it aside. I put the intake back on and started it up.

There is quite a bit of exhaust pressure coming out of that tube even at idle. Giving it a bit of pedal and it really increases. I see now how it combats the boost pressure.

So I plugged up the tube and let the egr valve suck fresh air. I did not even get out of my cul de sac and the check engine light came on.

It made total sense to me. The sensors are use to sensing exhaust pressure entering the intake and fresh air does not even come close to mimicking it on the boost side of the intake. Plus I did hear the boost coming out the egr valve which I never heard before.

So Rick, you are definately right!

I had thought about routing crankcase gases in place of the exhaust gases but the pressure is no where near that of the exhaust pressure. So that is out.

If we are going to be sucessful at disabling the egr on the 606 turbo I believe we are going to have to do some type of condition mimicking to fool the sensors with the egr valve remaining closed.

Yep, someone who is goo with computers is going to have to come up with a chip or some sort of program to trick the sensor. Then sell it to the rest of us at $300 a pop!

Exactly. However, I don't think this is really that big a deal. Yes, there's a bit of sludge in the intake manifold, but they don't clog up nearly as much as a VW TDI. (please note the cars in my signature) My E300 has 130K miles on it, and the manifold has only been cleaned once. And with the introduction of ultra low sulphur fuel the soot and sludge will be even less of a problem. So my position is "just drive and enjoy."

The manifold on my friends had a large amount of sludge in it when he cleaned it at 150kish. Car was mostly highway driven.

My car has only 54k and the intake manifold is clean but the part with the egr valve was pretty sludgy.

Maybe I will just clean out that part every once in a while but something in me wants to have it bypassed.
