eBay is such a wonderful thing. We will see on the price apparently it is not on anyone's radar yet.
Yesterday @ $1.00 Today @ $2.25

I would simply never buy a car from an add that had all that superfluous fluff! Very little substance, other than "Gee, look at my pretty car!" Way too many cutsie wording in it too....

Its a nice car, but $12k is 350SDL money. I will say since its ebay $5k-$7k is where it ends.
If you want $12k for that car you will have to spend a few grand. The front has chips and needs to be repainted. On a $12k 300SD I would expect their to be not a single dent or rock chip anywhere. The dash would have to be replaced with a new one. I mean new as in brand new, a single crack is not acceptable on a $12k car. The floor matts are all weather ones. This leads me to beleive tha maybe the car has seen winter weather. A $12k SD is expected to not have the slightest hint of rust and look very clean when on a lift. Any oil leaks must be fixed. The currant floor matts should be replaced with OE MB ones. Ther would also have to be 100k-150k less on the odo. Its a nice car, but not a $12k car sorry.

That's a nice enough SD, but a 12k BIN assumes the car is perfect, and the ad is a bit over the top in its description. My favorite is the caption that reads 'CLEAN engine compartment'. For me, it takes more than just wiping off the top of the air filter housing to make a 'CLEAN engine compartment'. It's kinda grungy in there. 'Clean underneath' shows a leaky front crank seal.
The seller would probably make out like a bandit(but it still won't bring 12k) if he would only clean the car up well beforehand. The pictures don't describe a clean car, only a straight car. A little soap would help the car match the description IMHO.

For $12k I could buy a 100k mile 560sel.
or a mint 400E with less than 100k.

$12K can buy you lots of things... a short trip overseas, some furniture, an Immaculate 1997 Volkswagen Jetta- with horrid electronic problems and windows that will fall out of their tracks within weeks, a daily driver condition muscle car, a full wardrobe, partial funding for education, maybe a years worth of rent or more depending on where you live.....
Its all relative. But when it comes to used goods there is not set price or value, it worth what someone is willing to pay. What makes sense in one persons mind, may not be of the same value to another person. "why buy a $12K 300SD when you can buy a W124 300D?"... perhaps one prefers the w126 300SD OVER the W124 300D..... Like I previously mentioned, and as other have pointed out, for this car to fetch $12K some money needs to be invested into it it cosmetically speaking for anybody to even consider dropping $12K on this car. And thats just surface, cosmetic investment..... then theres the whole mechanical side. Somebody looking for a w126 300SD in Silver with a Gray interior in immaculate shape could very well spend $12K without hesitation on one. However, this one would need the pending issues repaired/corrected to increase the chances of this car truly appealing 100% to that buyer at the Buy It Now price. As we all know, mileage does not mean a thing when it comes to these cars mechanically speaking. A 84K miles 300SD is likely to be in better cosmetic shape than a 200K+ mile 300SD, but a regularly driven annd cared for 300SD with 200K+ miles is more likely to be in better mechanical shape, and may last longer.... and if it is in comparable, or even BETTER shape cosmetically than the 84K 300SD, than its value may be even MORE. So in my opinion, mileage means nothing to the value of the car if its not a museum piece 22K 300SD. At an asking price of $12K this car needs- Ding removal Front end paint chips repaired Replacement of front headlight doors Wheels professionally repainted in OE color- astral silver Fresh Tires New OE floor mats A Full Detailing: Undercarriage & Wheel wells cleaned Full Polish, wax, and trim detail Interior carpets shampooed And lastly, but very important!, All pending mechanical issues... leaks, old hoses/gaskets/filters, etc. repaired/replaced/updated. All mechanical systems should be as new- suspension, fuel system, transmission operating flawlessly, fuel delivery and injection operating properly, brakes, climate control, A/C, etc....

YOu know, I was reading over some of these post, and I'm thinking "Man, is that nit-picking". BUT, those nits, or lack thereof, is what makes one of these a $12K car. (to somebody, not everybody)
As-is, it's a very nice and desirable car to have, but just a very clean 126 ain't worth $12K. Half that is starting to really stretch, as mechanical condition isn't really established, just cleanliness.

I agree, the car appears to be VERY clean, and in nice shape. i would say above average for 300SD's of this age and mileage. If its in solid mechanical shape I would say a good value of its worth would be around $5K, maybe a little more.
If you want $12K for it though, the nit-pickin' details are what will make it a $12K automobile. If its put under a magnifying glass, its the details that will make or break a car.

No all you need is $5k for that! My friend bought his 70k mile S320 for $11.5k and it is not only far newer with about the third of the miles that car has on it, it gets about the same mileage around town. You can buy a lot of car for $12k these days.

So this car is worth so much because the badge ends with a 'D'?
The 617 was a nice engine in its day (i've owned 2, still have the NA), but the mileage they deliver is mediocre at best these days. Maybe people like adjusting valves?

Personal Preference
Id rather have an immaculate 617 powered MB over ANY other MB. WHY? because I LOVE the 617 engine for what it is, and the 1977-85 MB styling era over ANY other era of MB.
If someone were to offer giving me a free car of my choice, and I had to pick from an immaculate S320, 400E, 500E, 190E, C280, 280SEL 4.5, 450SL, or 300D Turbo (617), the choice would be obvious (for ME). the 617 300D Turbo. Im not the only one out there whom would choose the same. Thats why $12K for a 617 powered car in immaculate shape would be worth $12K to me... WHY? There arent very many IMMACULATE 617 powered cars out there. Nice ones yes, great drivers, yes. Most have been used, used well. Finding a truly cherry 617 car is HARD. And is a RARE find... certainly not as rare as a 190E 2.6 Sportline, or a W124 AMG Hammer. But never the less, RARE when looking ONLY at 617 powered cars. If I were in the market for a 617 car, and wanted to find the nicest one avail at any given moment, I would gladly pay $12k for one. SURE i could find one cheaper, but who knows when, and where, and if it is going to be AS nice...... This is why I see reason for these cars growing in value when in above average shape, and why the 300SD in question could very well be worth $12K if the details specified above are addressed. And of course, the increase in value helps the buyer in the long run, IF the trend continues. The values on immaculate 617 powered cars will increase across the board, whhich in turn will make investing into them SMART.. as the investment will be more likely to be returned in case of an accident or should one decide to sell their IMMACULATE 617 car. But if that doesnt happen, it wont stop me from investing into my 617 car I already own. Thats why im here, thats why I drive it, and thats what makes me happy when it comes to cars. Its all about personal preference. The best car for the best deal in the eyes of the person spending the money. Not popular opinion, or what somebody else thinks is a better car for the money... that all becomes irrelevant.
