1991 300d fuel gauge not working right

The fuel gauge on my '91 300d when full, will only go up about 1/2 way. Once the fuel starts coming down below that, it's accurate. It just won't go all the way to full. How can I fix this?
Thanks

jeff

Replace the sending unit. Straight diesel is a perfect inviroment for bacteria to form. So it cloggs up the sending unit, and the sending unit is an enclosed tube like the size of a paper towel roll. You can take it out and take it apart to clean it, or just replace it. You will need a 46mm socket. If I remember right, the unit is under the first aid kit box. If you start having fuel starvation problems, I would reccomend taking the car to a shop that can top the tank with gas and let it sit overnight then draining it. That will clear the tank up and with new filters you will be happy.

Problem fixed

I took the sender out and apart. The inside center rod had rust on it. I used my Rotozip on it with a fine sanding tool, got that off, and now, all is well! A one hour job at the most, even for a lightweight like me!!
