1986 420 SEL for parts 1987 300 SDL
I can get my hands on a 1986 420 SEL that "needs a fuel pump" for $2k. My 1987 300SDL needs a few things, AC control, vacuum switches, misc. other parts. I also would like to use the seats out of the 420. Would this be a good car to have in the back yard, I got plenty of space, for all those misc. parts that break, wear, whatever to put on the diesel. Also is there a market for the engine and tranny?
Thanks Ce |
$2K is quite alot for a parts car.

I agree. $2K is would buy a fair amount of brand new parts for the SDL. Remember, all those parts are old parts. Unless you need body panels, trim, and upolostery, the parts car doesn't make a lot of sense at that price.
I don't think you'll find much of a market for the V8. The transmission might have some value, but, the right person would need it at the right time. |
BUT, The SEL has a full leather interior and I want to swap out my MBTEX with it, assuming it is in as good or better shape then what I have. My assumption was I couldn't redo the interior for that price. SO then I was trying to figure out what to do with the rest of the car. I guess I could fix it up with the MBTEX interior and try to get my money back out of it. Then all the misc stuff I want other then the seats would have to stay in it though.

what color is it? if you part it out I'm looking for a body panel for an SDL in the dark blue version.

For $2k I'd fix the 420 and drive it. Thats a lot of money for a parts car.
I got a 1988 420SEL a couple of years ago for free with a blown engine. Except for the drive line they are very similer cars. Lots of interior and exterior parts are the same. I got the car for free, I wouldn't pay for a parts car. All the parts are just as shot and tired as the stuff I want to replace. I find the parts I got are pretty usefull when I am rebuilding stuff on the SDL. For example when I did my seat switches I pulled apart one of the 420's for spare balls and such. |

Most SDL's I have seen have leather also. I've seen complete parts cars for $500 or so here, I'd look elsewhere. |
