Gettin' there, little by little

Been wrenching on the 300D for while, changing the odd bit out here and there. Got the turbo and air cleaner oil return leaks all fixed, installed Bilstein HD shocks all-round, a coolant temp sensor, rack damper, etcetera etcetera. Eliminated all the auotmatic vacuum stuff from the valve cover and even polished it a bit while off for valave adjustment, replaced the air cleaner bracket and all the rubber mounts. Still have yet to install the new engine mount kit, mount shocks, driveshaft carrier bearing assembly and conversion of the door and trunk locks to electric actuators. I did get a pleasant surprise when the AC started working after repairing some damaged wiring and a simplification of the underhood vacuum lines.

One thing that's been consistent is a tock-tock-tock noise that we've narrowed down to cylinder #4. By cracking the injector lines inidividually we found the noise would go away on #4, so I replaced the injector to eliminate that possibility and yet the noise continues. Any suggestions? I've been told you can adjust the rack, but I haven't yet found that section in the service manual.

Here's a couple pics snapped for fun, one of the 300D's engine bay and the other of the $300 240D we picked up the other weekend.

Good Job

I was thinking....you might want to do the oil cooler lines, since you are going to have the mounts and shock(s) off - it would save you a bunch of time down the road. (if you have the $$)

Thanks! While I had the valve cover off I started buffing it with some 4" wheels and greaseless compound, but got frustrated because I didn't have any cone buffs for the injector recesses. I figure I'll have it off again sometime soon, so will get what I need to polish out to a mirror finish in the meantime. Then I'll powdercoat it clear!

Are you sure that buffing and clear-coating wont hurt heat dissipation? Plus the clear coat will probly yellow. Rocker covers have been known to warp from heat. I've filed down the stops located at bolt holes for tighter fit and leak-proof seal on every 240D I've owned, mostly at/near 200k miles.

it probably will hurt it some. but i wouldn't think enough to notice. i like the look but am too lazy to do it myself and too cheap to pay for it to be done.

Your noise on the fourth cylinder. Do the revs drop noticeably when you loosen that injector compared to say the one beside it when loosened? Or is there a distinct difference.

The RPM drop seems to be the same for each cylinder. Just the noise goes away with #4, which is why I swapped the injector to see if that might be the problem. But it still persists, and the noise changes with RPM.

If it were a gasser I'd almost be inclined to describe the noise as detonation, which if I understand correctly is similar to what "hot spotting" on pre-chambers does. Am I getting closer on this one?
