Tom,
I feel certain the car had good oil care. The bearings are not worn out so much as they are "showing" indications. I'm sure they could have continued in service but there is some unusual markings on them as you can see.

I collected a set of injectors recently and noticed that the back injector had a thick coating of motor oil on the bottom. I wondered if that was why the car was being parted out.

What are you thinking about the cause of the ring land failure?

Were you told anything about the symptoms, noise, performance, etc or how or why the engine failed?

I believe the car was run hot because it has a new radiator in it. Not sure if this could have broken the ring.

The block is at the machine shop being bored in preparation for the new oversize pistons. We decided to bore and go with oversize (all new pistons) versus re-sleeving and attempting to use the old pistons. Seems they were all showing some wear on the ring lands. Picked the rebuilt transmission up this morning. Nothing like a spotless transmssion.

Is that a MB rebuild or did you have someone local do it. How much was it?

A fella by the name of Raymond James with European Transmission Co in Atlanta did it for $1300. He came highly recommended but I'll post the verdict after it is in the car in operation.

Little setback with the rebuild. The machine shop called and said that two of the pistons were 30 grams different in weight than the other three (they were two different brands) soooo I had to get a matched set coming. Hopefully, they will be here next week and I can start putting everything back together.

block is back from the machine shop

I'm wondering if I should paint it black?

I should start re-assembly tomorrow.

You had better paint it........otherwise it's going to take on an ugly shade of rust in short order.......unless the owner is a fanatic and sprays it down with preservative every week........

I have a nice car like that sitting in the barn waiting for an engine, really nice "78", manual, 240D, no rust, beautiful black interior (not a wrinkle). Harder out west to find a good engine in a rusted/wrecked body. IMO a nice 123 is worth rebuilding an engine for if you are going to keep it epically. Putting money into a car that was well cared for is a good investment, the way I see it. Plus its allot of fun

This thread is very interesting as it shows you go in to drain the swamp and immediately are up to your butt in alligators.

The part that I'm missing, though, is who would put the kind of money you're talking about for all these repairs into a car that can be bought all day long for $2 to $3k. It doesn't make any sense to me.

And before anyone says you can't find these for $2 or $3k, you are wrong. I have 2 examples and see more of them every day. And if one dropped a cylinder, I'd part it out, buy another in a week, fix the minor stuff, and drive it.

That being said, the post mortem is interesting.

you cannot buy one with a fresh motor for 2 to 3k.

if the car is sharp with a fresh motor it will command closer to $5k.
