Fabric upholstery is rare in the US.
I expect he means the transmission slips or flares in the 1-2 shift. Between your level of familiarity and his eloquence, that judgment is best left to a qualified independent technician. I wouldn't dismiss a car with a bad transmission if it's otherwise a keeper. You can bite the bullet to have the transmission fixed at whatever cost and know you have one less thing to worry about in the long haul. Plus you can use the unbiased professional assesment as a bargaining chip. Unless the car you get has records indicating recent major transmission work it is more likely than not that even a car with good service history will need major transmission work in the next 5-10 years. I agree with jrgslg in general but a 190D 2.5 turbo is a rare beast that commands a premium. The question to you is whether a 190D 2.5 turbo is a must have.

Hey Sixto,
It's not a must have, except for better fuel economy. We already have a 2005.5 VW Jetta TDI. The 190D is the only older MB that comes close the the mileage of my '75 Honda GL1000 of 38 mpg. I would prefer to pleasure ride the bike, and daily driver the MB. The mileage of the car equates to 15,000+ miles per year. Not bad at all in my book. I'll be checking it out this weekend, as well as get estimates on a tranny rebuild. I had a Chevy P/U that would flare between 2-3. Turned out to be a bad torque converter that decided to implode way out of town at 11:00 pm. Thanks for all the input here! RRGrassi |

Don't trust mileage figures. My dad once bought a '84 300CD with only 145k. It looked like it had low mileage. On a lark, years later, I discovered the car had close to 400k counting the 60k my dad put on it.
Figure that the dealership has maybe a thousand or fifteen hundred in the car, and make a offer. |

John,
Sounds like your father got ripped off big time. Wow 400K! I was looking at the blue book on the high mileage 190D's. From what I could see retail on those should be $1000 to $1500 tops. I'll still check them out and see about offering $800 to $1000 I hope it all worked out for your father! RRGrassi |

Book value does not reflect what an enthusiast will pay, not to mention the heightened interest in Diesels these days. Unless the seller is completely in the dark, an $800-1000 MB Diesel will need a lot of work to be a safe and reliable daily driver. Search for similar cars in Autotrader, eBay, craigslist and other listings. You'll find lots of good running 190Es for under $1000. 190Ds for $1000 are basically parts cars. Assuming that car is as described, $3000 is a fair price today. People are paying twice that for cars in similar condition.
Which brings up another consideration. The market value of these cars far exceeds their typical insurance value as you found in this car's book value. Expect a battle with the insurance company if you have to file a claim. Sixto |

Well, he paid 5k for the car. It had perfect paint, chrome and a new leather interior. The a/c was cold, everything worked, and it drove really well. He drove it for five years and 50k miles. He sold it for 3k after my mother found out how many miles it had(via carfax, five years later). So he didn't do too bad, and he even had a trailer hitch installed when he bought it and helped move lots of furniture and other heavy things to my house.

Hey, Sixto,
Thanks for the added tidbit. I have noticed now anything diesel commands a higher price that gasoline. I wish I had the money years ago to get the MB diesel I wanted, when they had trouble giving away diesel cars. Oh well! John, I'm glad your father did not have too much trouble, but still, what a pain. Also learned that if the title shows "exempt" in the odometer/mileage section, you never know just how many miles are on that chassis or engine. Thanks again! RRGrassi |
