Swapping transmissions - torque conv. ??

I have 2 SDLs, 1 '86, and1 '87. '86 has bad engine, good transmission. '87 is the opposite, good engine, bad transmission.
Keeping the '86.
When I have both engines and transmissions out, I need to put the good tranny on the good engine. As I understand it, the torque converter will stay on the engine unless I unbolt it. Do I leave it on, or remove and reinstall?
As I write this it occurs to me that if I want to do the rear main seal, (as long as I am in there) I probably need to have it off - is this right?
Thanks, Andy

I would definetly switch torque convertors too so that you are putting the good transmission with a good torque convertor. I would never re-use a torque convertor from a bad transmission without having it professionally flushed.

Since you're using the car with the good trans, the lines and cooler should be good. If you were replacing a bad trans, I'd recommend flushing the lines and cooler too.

Thank you.
I don't know how bad the transmission is. The car was driven from KS to MN, maybe 6 or 700 miles. First gear is slippy - after the car warms up you need to idle it into second and then everything is fine. The B2 has already been changed, so it must be a band?? -Andy

The B2 was changed you say, but was the B2 band clearance adjusted?

I didn't change the B2, so I don't know. I will check out how to check the band adjustment. I think I know the answer... but suppose the band is not adjusted, and I manage to adjust it to spec. Is there any way to check and see if it works before I put it all back into the car? -

Haven't done it myself, but I believe you can apply air pressure carefully to the B2 somehow..You certainly don't need to remove much to do this though, it can be done in the car. worst case you need to remove the valve body, but its all pretty starightforward once you drop the pan. If this car is new to you, you probably want to change fluid and filter anyway.
