I asked the feds that stopped me and they were checking ANYTHING that they might suspect running off road fuel. The "GIVE AWAY" on a 123 is obviously the clear pre filter.

Never Tested

I've been driving my diesel for three years now, never been tested for untaxed fuel.
My parents have been driving Mercedes diesels for 23 years and they have never been
tested for untaxed fuel.

This has not happened to me, but when I was working in Louisiana, it happened to my boss (he was an a-hole, so it couldn't have happened to a better guy!)

We were leaving the port and he was pulled over. Since I really didn't care, I just kept on going. When we got back to the shop, he told me that the cop checked his fuel to see if he was running untaxed marine diesel. I laughed my ass off!! Kharma is a *****!!

Never been tested in Pennsylvania. My father owned a gas & diesel station for 20 years and was not aware of any customers having it either.

Only time I've seen it in the south east....

...is in weigh stations. It's called something like, "Operation Fuel Track" and the sign has a red flame logo. (Hint on I 40 both sides in NC near Hillsboro).
Last Feb. I took the MB to get inspected at a national chain lube store - NO questions, NO comments - I really don't think they know to check the clear filter or what red fuel means.

BUT when stationed in Germany I saw checkpoints set up at random locations and they DO NOT need to dip into the tank!! Applies to locals AND US Military.
They have a paper strip, similar to litmus, held at the exhaust pipe, engine running. The only good thing is you can pay onsite and it's not a moving violation. Home heating oil sells for about the same as here. Road taxed diesel as of today (according to my brother-n-law) is equal to $6.75 a gallon. My father in law's long time friend drives a company CDI, commutes about 85 miles a day and has been caught about 7 times! But with that much driving he's still ahead money-wise.

A couple of years ago, I went on a 26 day road trip, up to South Dakota, west to Washington, south to California, then back east to home. On that whole entire trip, the only random checks we encountered were made by the border patrol. I suppose they could have been checking for red diesel at the truckers' weigh stations but there was nothing that stopped main traffic. I drove 4400 miles to San Francisco and back last week and didn't see any check points of that sort. I've only been driving a diesel Mercedes for two years but I haven't ever been stopped.

News story was posted here couple of years back where a guy rolled over his Ford Diesel pickup. Red fuel all over the hiway. He was handed a $10k fine.
That is a surefire way to get caught.

Now we are talking about your car, not your farm truck or you big rig... but have you ever had your mercedes car fuel sampled here in the United States.
Heating oil is taxed in the US (at a lower rate) and seems to cost about the same as diesel; maybe a bit less. But you're buying on volume and could probably purchase diesel at a discount if you were taking delivery on 200 gallons at a clip.

Heating oil prices:

I was always under the impression that the US govt typically does not take an active interest in what people use to power their vehicles so long as it is not stolen and meets standard safety and EPA requirements. In fact, alternative fuel source development is encouraged through tax credits.

there are 2 yes's

There are 2 yes's above but I notice one of you is from Canada... Ah,
So we will include Canada in our little survey. Now remember we are not talking about your big rig, or your farm truck but your mercedes diesel car.
So the gentleman whos boss was caught... what was he driving?

Now in England they are fining people 500 pounds for stoping at grocery stores and buying cooking oil for diesel fuel....Why, becasue they loose 4 dollars or more tax per gallon.... In America the gov looses about .50 cent.
but if homade biofuels keep growing in popularity they will crack down on us.
But the current system is a chemical dye marker and its placed in untaxed diesel....So of course your deep frying grease will pass any test...

Second, Customs merged with Border patrol and I just happen to work for these guys... and we look for terrorist, dope and illegal aliens.... so I dont think any of us guys are checking fuels... But perhaps big rigs.....

I was pulled over last night in the greasel, and given a warning for expired tags but no mention of fuel.

The average cop isn't going to bother somebody driving a old diesel car. However, in rural/marine areas, you might not be so lucky. Lots of farmers still drive those old Isuzu diesels and you can bet they run them on red fuel.

It's not legal, so if someone get's pinched it shouldn't be a shock.

...and, no, I have never had my fuel checked and I have driven MB diesels for 22 years.

If you do get pinched, you were asking for it, no different from running a gas car on moonshine.

stats

washington state where they actively check vehicles...

notice the word comercial vehicles

Last year, the patrol checked 25,406 commercial vehicles and found that 95, or less than one-half of 1 percent, were illegally using untaxed diesel.
anyone with information about fuel-tax evasion to make a confidential call to the State Patrol's toll-free hot line at 800-497-FUEL.

Yes it would. I haven't had any in 16-17 years myself. My buddy used to keep it in the "other" fridge out in the garage in mason jars. Once in a while we would treat ourselves to a snort. It just gets better with age.
