i should imagine top end would be 60 to 65 max.

i would like to examine it in person to see how it would work as a camper. it looks a bit tight...but i am speaking from the perspective of having a 35' trailer. which admittedly is a lot like dragging around a suite from the holiday inn around.

i cant imagine getting 26 mpg with it, unless you drove 32.5 mph.

Hey,I just happen to be up in Winnipeg for a hockey tournament - tempted to go check it out. Alas, I don't have the $ for a camper at this particular point and being a 240D owner, it's hard to imagine this thing cruising down the highway with any power whatsoever. Sure looks clean.

It looks like the precursor to those Sprinter van/campers I've been seeing while driving by the RV dealers on I-5. But I'd bet the Sprinters with the MB CDI diesels will get up and go a lot quicker than this slowmobile!

Wonder why MB didn't drop a turbo 60x engine in it? It is a 1987, after all. That would have made the amount of power a bit more acceptable

Interesting looking rig. I myself owned a 1973 MB L406D camper for a couple of years. Longer than this one, probably heavier. It was also fitted with the same OM616 engine. 4 speed manual transmission. Double wheels in the back. It was very well finished inside (a home-made job, but very well done). Chassis was solid as a rock, vehicle was in outstanding mechanical shape (had been given a complete go-over by MB before the PO shipped it from Europe, to drive across Canada - he ran out of money in Ottawa, which is where I bought it). It was VERY slow. Acceleration was probably the slowest I've experienced in a vehicle. Topped out around 50-55mph (with a good tail wind!). Going up a steep hill, you'd likely have to downshift to second, if not first! Got great mileage (25mpg imperial) for a rig of this size!
SOld it to 3 university kids who drove it all the way to California and back!! THe kid emailed me on the return and had the gall to chastise me because he had to replace the alternator at some point on the trip... Heck, a 30 year old vehicle took you across the continent and back and you complain about an alternator???
Indeed, if MB had put a OM617 in this 1987 rig, it would be much better drivable...

yes, 5000 for a camper this size is prob a bit light but not startlingly so. but it i am sure has a much better build quality than your typical us built camper.

Build quality, indeed. The L406D-derived camper I owned was built like a WWII truck underneath: massive ladder frame, huge axles, leaf springs, etc. Outdated technology perhaps, but it sure was built to last. Those L406D trucks and similar models were used by the German Postal Service for years, I was told. And most of them have found their way into the third world where they continue to do yoemen's duty, hauling people and goods on rough roads. I talked to a german guy who drove one of those truck around the world, all up and down the Americas. He said the best mechanic for those trucks was at a MB dealership in Guatemala City, of all places!
The truck on sale on Ebay is a later evolution of those 60's and 70's trucks, as the Sprinter van is a later evolution too (or the beefier van to the Sprinter that for some reason Daimler Benz did not deem worthwhile to sell on these shores...) On the german MB site there used to be a neat photo montage of the evolution of MB vans.
