The real question is - what did you get for $600? Cheap auto parts always bite back, and the AC system is no place to skimp on quality parts.

Are you coming down anytime this summer or x-mas? Let me know and we'll try to find the leak. There is no sense in having to run these cars without a good, working a/c unit. Just hope that the leak is NOT in the evaporator. That makes the job a good bit more involved but on the same hand I'll say there is nothing better than a brand new clean evaporator on a good running r12 system.

Over the past couple months I picked up a 240D and the a/c compressor does not come on. My plans are to evantually pull the dash and replace the evap when I put the system back into operation just to insure that I've got the cleanest evap in there that I can run.

"It maintains pressure over the summer but over the winter it all leaks out."

This is a good time to remind people that all manufacturers suggest that the AC be turned on at least monthly all the year.... in your case maybe every two weeks would be better.. this pushes oil up to the seal at the compressor shaft to keep it lubed and flexible.

I just can't stand the idea of pulling the dash... but I do plan on making sure the evap is clean... DMorrison's clogged evaporator fins were a real eyeopener...

Dead-on correct about that. My father keeps reminding me and I do listen it's just that I myself forget to do it.

Judging by the looks of that evap you pulled that time I'd say you're right.
It had what looked like matted dog hair all over it. From what I have gathered they are all pretty much like that by now. I do believe everybody that plans on keeping their w123s will be pulling their evaps whether they like it or not

Ac

I'm getting ready to pick my 126 up from the AC shop.

He pushed a little to convert me over. He told me it would be cheaper in the long run. He didn't look it up, but said it would be 500 bucks worth of R-12 to get me going.

I assured him I already had two cans, and could buy more on Ebay.

He checked with his distributor.. and found 14oz cans for 35 bucks. He was surprised, and I just had a smile on my face.

I don't think he was actively tryiing to screw me.. He just wasn't plugged into current R-12 cost and availability. I think a lot of shops gave it up long ago. Now they think it's some kind of taboo thing. It's not.. It just takes a little planning.

I will be purchasing some online for future years use.

MeinGreaseCar,
YES !!! Finally all that posting we have done to combat the impression that R12 would cost an arm and a leg paid off for someone.

no a.c

Hell. I wish I could find someone to fix my system for $600 or even $1200 bucks. My mechnic wanted $1200 just to replace the compressor and dryer. He said it could need more work too. I've been told that it could cost $2000 to re-do the whole system if it's been non-working for a long time due to corrosion, etc. I decided to buy another car to drive in the summer months that has working a.c. Some older jap car for about $3000 makes more sense to me than spending that much for a.c. on a car that i bought for $3000.

I'll be down there in the fall, can't wait to see the old feller and see how he's doing. Have to install a new SS exhaust for his Healey, help him load it into the hauler so he can go show it off in his hometown fall festival parade thing. At that time I'll be doing a little bit of stuff on the D and would be glad to come over and say hey. Thanks for the invite. Good going on that $10k auction, so sad to see it go.
I don't need a manifold or anything to quickie charge my A/C with the 134-in-a-can do I? A/C work is like reading a Chinese newspaper to me.
You charge it thru the low-side nipple, correct? And where is that one?

AutoZone or Advance sells r134 charge kits with these little gauges/hose, etc... The low side connection is the one on the passenger side of the valve cover at the front. Be forwarned - it is a guessing game when using one of those kits from these places.

My compressor seized this week... i don't know how long it was in there..i'll be pulling it this week.

i saw a compressor on ebay at a good price 195 shipped.... noticed another board member had bought one and was happy with it.

i also ordered up a drier and an expansion valve... a little over 50 dollars..

this system was converted to r134a.

Could i just pull a vaccuum and put r-12 in it...or would it be more involved?

if it's much more involved, i'll re-do 134a...

i'll do all the work myself..... although i will have to pay someone to pull and vaccuum. i don't have that piece of equipment.

Are you planning on flushing the system before you install the new compressor?

D.Delano, I would rather take a chance on hurting your feelings than to hear later that you hurt yourself doing this...
I think that it is clear from your questions that you can not do this job safely at this point in time.
I have four AC manuals which I consult.... what shows up most vividly when looking at them compared to the instructions you get from a forum is SAFETY WARNINGS... they are FULL of them...this stuff is both under pressure and cold..how do you think they freeze off cancer spots instantly ?
Whatever you do I suggest you wear Goggles AND a full face shield...and gloves... I know that a lot of macho guys are rolling their eyes right about now... but 35 years ago , when I knew about the amount you know about ac I almost blew a can of R12 up IN my face.. with no face protection... I was lucky... think about it... Greg
