Does anyone have real world comparison results of city mpg between a 300D 2.5 and 95 E300? Are EPA ratings representative for both cars?

I have a 93 300D 2.5 L.

In the city I typically get 28 - 29 miles a gallon. That is if I am not in a hurry, just usual driving

As a side note, I get about 35 - 37 miles a gallon on the highway ( 65 - 70 MPH )

On the average fill up, combined city/highway driving I get about 450 miles on 13 gallons.

U may want to consider a 2.5L 300D, if u r looking to get another diesel.

Some of the plus points on owning this car:

1) simple to maintain - serpentine belt, no valve adjustments

2) timing chain swap took only 45 mins ( If u have a friend to help u )

3) pleasure to drive - pickup is okay but driving is fun once u get going on the highway

Wow - I would think your mileage is abnormal, but I don't know that for certain.

I rarely drive my '95 in the city, but on the highway I get around 30mpg with the AC on cruising at 80-85mph. If I had to guess for city mileage, I would say 25 or so.

EPA ratings for a 1992 2.5T is 26 city/31 hwy.
EPA ratings for a 1995 3.0 is is 26 city/32 hwy.

Reason I went with the '95 is because it has a 23.8 gallon fuel tank and the 1992 has a 18.5 gallon tank. A '95 can range 650-700 miles on a tank.

I get about 30mpg around town also and 32mpg at 80mph. If I drive 65-70mph I get about 34mpg.

Guess I have to drive slower - nah.

About the same with my '91 2.5T. My last fill-up, in grueling summer L.A. traffic, was 31 mpg.

25MPG in the city, minimum, with 200,000 and a new injection pump. Might be a small vacuum problem, as it occasionally shifts hard.

I never go on trips in the vehicle,so I have no idea what the highway mileage is

I live in California. There r small hills even on highways. To improve my consumption, I always switch off my A/C, if I have it on, anytime I go up a hill.

Biggest wear and tear and, increase in consumption, is starting the vehicle. If stopping for a short time, leave the engine idling. Use a separate key to lock the door while u r away.

It is a diesel. If u feel u need to get 5.0 secs - 0-60 mph, everytime u take off, u r driving the wrong car. Vehicle sympathy is important.

Additives r important. Once in a while, something to clean the injectors, piston rings (I use Lucas fuel additive that does both).

Never park this car uphill, nose up. Coolant may leak out from the expansion tank. U could also loose transmission fluid - there is a part at the back of the transmission ( if the o-ring is old ). It is also a good idea to replace the o-ring at the base of the oil dip stick tube, for cars this old (U do not have to drain the tranny fluid to do this. U will lose some fluid. Replace the fluid when u r done.) Many owners do not realise this and wonder why their transmisson failed.

I feel the bottom panels, under the car, do not let u see early enough if there is a drip or leak. I have both bottom panels sitting in the garage. I would not have realised there was a leak at the rear of the transmission ( I was parking nose up ). I saw the tell tale signs on the driveway. It is also easier to tell if u r leaking any diesel.

Finally listen to ur car. Once in a while pop the hood up and listen to the engine.

As a side note, get in the habit of idling ur car for at least a minute or two, especially after a long trip, before switching off the engine. This helps cool down the engine and extends the life of the engine.

I have the OM606 in my 1996 E300d and get 28-30 around the town and 33 on the highway @80mph.

i had a 91 300d. low twenties in town for me. very short trips. on highway driving 75 best i ever got was 33 i think when my rear muff was going bad.

i also had a 90 300e 2.6. iirc i got high teens around town and low twenties on the highway. i think the 3.0 gets about the same.

.... and I also have my EGR blocked off ( for testing purpose ).

I don't know if that has much to do with consumption.

I love my 300D 2.5, no rocket off the gate but not bad. I attached my fuel milage check sheet for the fun of it. It has some gaps but is a good sample of what I get. I find that if I keep it at 2800 RPM or below ~75 or less. I will always get around 31-32+ if I run 80+ the RPM runs 3000+ and I drop below 30. I currently drive slower...Getting older and can't afford the ticket. The timing chain replacement appears to have boosted the MPG by ~1 this was just completed only a few tanks in my test.

My EGR has been corrected also and is now clean.

Just got 33 mpg in L.A. metro. One advantage of the 2.5T: it's got the last classic MB grill; and its MB tex is the last of the pleated seats.

Anyone know why MB went N/A in the mid '90s?
