1987 190d
Well, I went and looked at the 190D in Garland, TX. They are asking $3977 for it. It has 287,000 miles on it. There is no way in my opinion that the car is worth that much! It started, and missed on one of the cylinders, after about idling for 5 min, it smoothed out. I found a fuel leak on the IP. Looks like one cylinder was being starved for fuel. The transmission fluid was very low, and underneath the car you can see where the underbody was being showered with tranny fluid. It did not smell burned, but it does look like fluid has been constantly added to it.
The engine did not exhibit any blowby. No "tea kettle" movement by the filler cap, even with the miss. This car is currently listed on Ebay, and the pictures look way better than the car does in person. The AC blew cool, and the sightglass revealed that it needs a shot of freon. It looks like someone took a fist to the sunroof and antenna switches. All windows worked, antenna worked, sunroof opened, but does not close, power locks do not function. The hood pad needs replacing as well. Because of the low transmission fluid, I did not take it for a test drive. There were many attempts at interior repairs that looked really bad, like vinyl stapled to the lower dash panel below the steering wheel. There were no signs of rust or water leaks. This car would make a great fixer upper for about $1000 in my opinion, because of the work needed to make it road worthy. A rebuilt tranny costs about $1600 to $1800 at the local transmission shop. I think I did the right thing by walking away. I have another one to look at this week. |

You did the right thing and walked away from it! It probably has a trans that is on its last legs . Look on Craigslist regularly in major cities for a 190D and get a stick shift if you want a long lasting transmission and great fuel economy. Even if you have to fly half way across the continent to buy one you will be way ahead of buying a fixer that happens to be local.

I've driven that car before. I'm guessing it was at Durango motors off Forest Ln in Garland. I drove it at their other location off loop12 near Grand Praire. Tranny only shifted from first to third. No second or fourth. It is a turbo 2.5, and runs like a bat outta hell, even with just 2 gears.
AC was coolish, but only a 70 degree vent temp was reached. This was 3 months ago. At that time it didn't drip any tranny fluid, so they must have tried to fix something, or just change fluid and created some other issue also. Navy blue paint was leaving in a hurry for sure. Engine had no blowby AT ALL, and ran wonderfully. Front end felt great, as did suspension in general. Not worth what they want for it, and at the time they offered it to me for $2500. for $3900 I see they have picked the crack pipe back up...... A nice example of that model MB would be a great car to have. Very warm wagon anyone??? anyone......... Bueller? **link to my previous thread on this car** I drove my first 190D today! Liked it...

Yes, it was at Durango Motors in Garland. That car is now on eBay. I was afraid to test drive it with the tranny leaking the way it was.
I am thinking about out of state cars, but trying to get time off of work, that is the kicker! |

Yeap, nothing beats going and look at the car yourself. That Dallas 1987 190D is now over $2000. A good one is hard to come by, especially a good low milage one. I assume you are looking at this one:
