Post 1985 300SD Motor shot?

As you can tell by post count and member date, I am a newbie. I just bought an 85 300SD last week and have a question or two.

The car will start, but there is a nice banging noise (sounds like someone hammering under the hood) and it will die shortly after unless the gas pedal is constantly pressed.

I also need to know if anyone in the Arlington Tx area knows where to get a good (preferably cheap) replacement engine if this is worst case scenario.

No immediate answers, only a question - why did you buy it?

What color is it? I think I know the car.

If so, it needed rod bearings. Problably much more now.

LOL... That is a good question... I bought it because it was cheap. I knew it would need some work, just not sure how much.

The color is dark blue.

You want another one? I have a project SD I have been working on for a couple of yrs.
New transmission, brake master, hoses, battery, body is rust free, runs, drives.

Needs exhaust, one ball joint and interior work. The front left fender and hood are not in good shape but I'll include replacements. Windshield is cracked.

I thought of restoring it but have been putting it off looking for a better interior.

I've lost the key twice so, I am wondering whether to keep it for parts (If I ever find a nice one) or let it go to someone who will finish it.

Any idea how long it's been since a valve adjust was completed?

Any compression test done recently?

These may help you identify a problem, but you are best to hook up with someone in the DFW area that's really good with these cars...there are a LOT of them here.

Are you ready to get your hands very dirty?
